Although Avery was tired from the long day she had spent at work, there were only so many excuses she could make with her colleagues as to why she couldn't attend Friday evening drinks after skipping multiple times.
"Ooh, you look sexy!" Lauren gushed as Avery walked towards the waiting Sprinter van she sat inside of, which was set to take them over to the bar.
Although her outfit wasn't overly sexy, Avery knew she looked good. The vintage Gaultier top and black skirt she wore looked as though it had been painted onto her body and her heels accentuated her legs in the best way.
Blushing at the unexpected compliment, Avery smiled and replied, "Thanks, Lauren! I just wanted to put in a little effort tonight."
As she settled into her seat in the van, Avery couldn't help but feel grateful for her friends who always knew how to lift her spirits. Despite her exhaustion, she was looking forward to unwinding with good company and a few drinks.
The van pulled up to the bar, and as Avery stepped out onto the sidewalk, the sounds of laughter and music greeted her. She took a deep breath, ready to let loose and enjoy the night ahead. After all, she knew that sometimes the best memories were made when you least expected it.
Brandon was one of the first people every and Lauren saw upon entering the upscale bar, he greeted them with a warm smile and a hug, his easygoing nature instantly charming Lauren who practically glued herself to him.
As handsome as he was, there was only one man that Avery had eyes for. It was as if Omar had a sixth sense; as soon as he crossed her mind, Avery's phone began vibrating in her purse.
She fished it out to see a message from Omar that read, "I'm in your city, where are you?" Avery couldn't help but smile at the perfect timing and felt a rush of excitement at the thought of seeing him.
After returning from Coachella they were back to their regularly scheduled program, with Avery traveling to Vegas to be with him whenever she had the chance.
Yesterday when she spoke to him last, he excitedly revealed to her that he had received the date for his next fight.
They hadn't made solid plans to see one another, but Avery couldn't deny the flutter of anticipation in her stomach at the thought of seeing Omar again. She quickly typed out a response, "I'm at the bar with friends. Come join us!" and hit send before tucking her phone back into her purse.
It was only once the message was sent that Avery remembered Omar wasn't a normal man and their situation, no matter how normal their relationship was.
To the rest of the world Omar was a champion in the boxing ring. But to Avery, he was so much more. He was her rock, her confidant, and the man who made her feel like the most cherished person in the world. Their relationship was unconventional, filled with long-distance phone calls and stolen moments together whenever they could manage it.
