Avery had been dealing with a persistent headache for the past week, while Marcus steadfastly refuted all of Brooke's accusations against him. Despite this, he was able to post bond for fifty-thousand dollars and secure his release.
Police had searched Avery's house for cameras or any clues that Marcus had even been in her property and found nothing. They'd also done a sweep of Marcus and were unable to find anything that suggested he'd been watching her.
Regardless Avery felt on edge and still had a restraining order put in place, she'd also heard that Brooke had made similar arrangements.
She hadn't seen Brooke since the night of her father's birthday, but Avery's mind had been on her constantly. Although they hadn't spoken or been around one another in months, the betrayal that she felt cut deep.
"I'm still in shock," Chaney sighed in disbelief. Of all the men throughout the city of Atlanta and beyond, Avery's ex was who she chose to turn to and subsequently work against her best friend.
As overcome as she was, Avery was all cried out. It hurt like hell to know the truth, but it was better than living in ignorance.
"I'm actually disgusted. How could she do this to me?" Avery muttered under her breath, her hands trembling with a mix of anger and hurt.
She couldn't believe that Brooke, her supposed best friend, had teamed up with Marcus, the man who had caused her so much pain in the past.
"What does Omar have to say about all of this?" Chaney asked curiously.
Avery shook her head, her expression hardening. "He's just as shocked as I am. He can't believe Brooke would do something like this either."
"I don't think anyone can, we were like sisters," Chaney agreed.
Avery's heart sank at Chaney's words. The betrayal cut even deeper knowing that their bond was like that of sisters. It felt like a stab in the back from someone she had trusted wholeheartedly.
As the reality of the situation settled in, Avery knew that she needed to confront Brooke. She couldn't let this betrayal go unanswered.
"At some point I have to talk to her," Avery declared, her voice firm with determination. "I need to hear her side of the story, as hard as it may be."
Chaney nodded in understanding. "Just be careful, Avery. Emotions are running high right now, and you don't want things to escalate."
Avery took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions swirling inside her. "I know, but I can't just let this go. I need answers Chaney."
She knew it wouldn't be easy to face Brooke, but she couldn't ignore the gnawing feeling of betrayal eating away at her. Avery needed closure, and the only way to get it was to confront her former best friend.
Avery and Chaney sat at lunch in one of their favorite restaurants in the city, as they sipped on their drinks, Avery felt a sense of unease creeping up her spine. She knew that the conversation with Brooke would be difficult, but it was something she had to do.
