Round 1 - Part 1

And here we go — ready, steady, write!

So, how does this work? As you might have suspected, we won't make things  too easy for you. Because easy is boring, right? 

Each of you will compete in both part 1 and 2 of the first round. The task for part 1 will be to write a short story of 1500 words maximum in two weeks. Part two will be announced once the first part is done. 

The sixteen best scoring authors of round 1 part 1+2 will move on to round 2.

The deadline for Round 1 - 1 is Saturday, August 17th. The second prompt (Round 1 - 2) follows after this deadline in two weeks.

Prompts

To honour our sponsors, you first story has to be a maximum of 1500 words long, and it must feature a newly written book and a character named Pipaluk.

Of course, your story must qualify as speculative fiction, but we don't restrict the genre in this round. So everything from fantasy to SciFi and horror goes, dark or light. The story must be written in English, and fit the above prompts though. 

Also: your story doesn't need to follow up on your qualifying entry, but if you wish to do so, you may continue your first story. We had one participant doing this last year—from the qualifier to the finals—so it's certainly possible. If you want to write something completely different for this round, that's totally fine though!

Round winners will get shoutouts of both sponsoring profiles, the chance to get featured in the anthology of FlashficCommunity and newlywrittenbooks will showcase a quote from the winner's story in their "Share Your Story Quotes" initiative.
