When You Least Expect It

Chapter 7

Lily's pov:-

Today was a weird day. After Ms.Cooper walked me to my apartment door, I immediately got ready for bed. But now lying in bed with Sasha, I can't close my eyes, I have been staring at my ceiling for an hour.

   I don't know how to feel about Ms.Cooper and Ms.Gilmer. I mean, I know Ms.Cooper makes me feel safe that I want to crawl into her lap. But Ms.Gilmer on the other hand, is my professor. Who makes me very nervous. But, she also made me feel safe.

I don't remember ever feeling safe before knowing Adam. Well, you may wonder, what happened to my family? I'm an only child. After my father died when I was 5, my mom got married to my stepdad. My mom had changed after she married him.

   When she first married him, he used to be nicer to her. But as the days passed he got worse. He got to the point where he would hit both of us. I asked my mom to break up with him a million times, But she chose him over me. It was so bad, I used to be covered in bruises all the time. And one day my mom started to abuse me too. Both verbally and physically.

   It was like this for years. until one day my mom discovered that he was cheating on her with another woman, and she went crazy. She broke everything in the house and she even hit me when I tried to stop her. Then when he got home they got into a big fight that ended with my stepdad dying. She stabbed him 3 times in his chest. When I saw it happening I knew I needed to get out, so I ran.

And since then I haven't heard from my mom. I know she got arrested and my stepdad died because it was all over the news. I was 17 when it happened. I stayed homeless for a year until I found Mrs.James's library, I used to go there every day to read. One day Mrs.James offered me a job and a place.

   A few months later, the police informed me that my mom had unalive herself in prison, and gave me her money. With the money I was able to pay for my studies, and the apartment rent.

I sat up and reached out for my phone to check the time. It was almost 2am. I got out of bed and went to the kitchen. I looked in the fridge for a snack, but it was empty. I groaned and walked to the couch. What am I supposed to do now? I turned on the TV and sat there with Sasha until I fell asleep.

The next morning I was woken up by a knock on the apartment door. WTF! Who is it at this godly hour? I got up from the couch with my phone in my hand. I checked it and found missing calls from Ms.Cooper. Shit! I opened the door to be face-to-face with Ms.Gilmer.

Elizabeth's pov:-

I have been waiting for Lily for 20 minutes now. I called Vee to call her, but she said she wouldn't pick up. So I decided to go up to her apartment. I texted Vee about it and she sent me the apartment number.

   I knocked on the door. A minute later the door opened and I was standing face-to-face with obviously just woken up Lily. "Ms.Gilmer?!" I looked her up and down silently for a second, "Good morning, sleepy head. you didn't answer any of Vanessa's calls so we got worried. Are you okay?" I asked and she nodded, "Yes. I'm sorry. I was sleeping and didn't hear the phone." She said looking at her hand.

   "What time did you go to bed?" I asked again, Lily looked at me nervously, "I don't know." She said looking back to her hands. I hummed, "Okay. Go get ready and I'll go grab us breakfast from somewhere close by," she looked up with raised eyebrows in disbelief, "Why?" She asked, "I thought we could have grab breakfast together. But I don't think we have the time. So well you go get ready, I'll grab us the food." I said simply. But she still stood there unsurely.
