I hear her on the other end. I listen quietly while I listen to her speak."Hey, Jess!" I hear a man say.
"Hey, Nick." I hear her response, and perk up when I hear her voice.
"How are you doing? Lauren told me you've been acting strange lately."
"I'm good. Just been stressing about school." She lies to him, since I know the truth is she's actually afraid of the reactions we'll get when we come out with our love. She's a bad liar though, but I hesitate as I listen because I'm afraid as well of our secret coming out. My heart skips a beat when I hear her voice, reminding me how much I miss my love. My head is in a turmoil deciding between threatening or sending more love letters for the sake of our love.
"Aw, it'll be okay. It'll be over before you know it." I can sense the man is happy about talking to her. Sounds like he misses her.
"I know, I miss you a lot though. When are you done with finals?"
"In a couple weeks. I'll be home for Christmas as usual. We'll see each other soon, sis."
"I know, and I can't wait to see you. I wish you weren't so busy with college."
"I know, me too."
"Hey, I think Lauren is about to be heading over, so I'll talk to you later."
"Okay, I love you."
"Love you too, bro." The click sounds out, signalling the call ended. I stay on the line a second longer before I place the phone down and go back to the living room with my roommate.
I look out my window, thinking do I need to take care of him too?
