my heels echoed through the wide halls as i walked, my hands tucked into my white lab coat's pockets. i exhale and kept my eyes forward.
i halted my steps in front of a door, a chill went down my spine suddenly, as if it was my body warning me of something. i pushed aside the feeling and tapped ny knuckles against the door, it swung open before the third knock.
"you're late."
my gaze hardened in glare at the winged man, who was also a friend of mine. like usual, wearing his beige coat and pants, his hair messed up from flying.
"as if you were actually too busy here to complain about my punctuality, hawks." i replied rolling my eyes.
"oh, did someone roll off the wrong side of the bed this morning?" closing the door to his office in his agency, getting a click from my tongue in response. "what can i help you with y/n? i'm usually the one who visits you."
"i'm not really here to just chitchat with you and eat food." i said taking a folder with documents out of my bag. "take a look."
"what do we have here?" hawks said taking the folder as i hand it over to him.
"the paperwork you sent to my workers." i stated, hawks skimmed through the documents and looked up to me. "i came here personally to ask you why the hell do you want me to issue my hero support equipment to you AND a dna test."
"im sorry, but i can't tell you that just yet." hawks responded unserious throwing the folder filled with papers in his desk, crossing his arms over his chest. "its classified info only the hero commission and i know."
"then i can't work with that, im sorry." i replied making my way towards the door annoyed at my winged friend's attitude. "i can't simply lend you my equipment without any knowledge of where or how its going to be used just because we're friends."
"c'mon, don't be such a meanie now!" hawks placed his hand over the door knob, "i need it for a mission, did you not read the request?"
"i did hawks, my equipment has nothing to do with the also requested dna test." hawk's face dropped as he heard my statement.
"pretty pleeeeease, just issue it, your workers already have the dna samples i want you to study!" hawks made those stupid puppy eyes he always did whenever things didn't go his way.
"ugh—fine, i'll only do as you say with one thing in exchange." i said placing my hands on my hips. he nodded allowing me to proceed. "i'll need access to all your intel. EVERYTHING."
at first hawks was a bit hesitant to accept my offer, since it meant that he would tell me everything about this mission of his that required my help.
i placed my hand in front of him, hawks rolled his eyes and gave me a smile shaking my hand, agreeing with my deal. "you win this time just because you're the best of the best."
"pleasure doing business with you hawks, i'll personally give you the results tomorrow, in my lab." i smiled and winked.
"perfect. you may want to check your email for insight on what i'm doing, take care."
hawks nodded and opened his door for me, letting me out, i said my goodbyes as i walked out of his agency, making my way towards my lab.
[...]
i spent the entire day and afternoon working on what hawks had asked me to do.
removing my goggles and gloves, i looked at the papers handed to me by my workers; they too had spent their evening working with me. it was only fair to let them go home early on the condition they turn their paperwork in to me first.
i walked back from the lab to my office to check if hawks had sent the email containing the purpose of why he was relying so heavily on me.
nothing yet.
my concentration and thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knock at my office door.
"i thought i said you all could go home early," i said as i heard footsteps approaching.
standing before me was a woman in a bright, secretary-like uniform, handing me a folder full of documents, each one containing health records of every citizen in the nearby area.
"i'm on my way out, boss, but as you can see," the woman began, "we still haven't found anything from the health records."
i quickly skimmed through every single document. the woman was right—the dna given to me didn't match anyone local. this must mean it belonged to someone from another country or even continent.
i sighed and looked at the woman. "are there any more documents we can get on every single citizen in japan?"
"i'm sorry, boss, but private hospitals won't really cooperate with private labs like this one unless they've worked together before," the woman stated as she gathered everything she gave me and walked out of my office. "i believe we'll need to rely on ai for this one..."
i nodded, thinking about what to do next, but then the email hawks had promised finally came in.
i started reading and analyzing every single sentence. apparently, hawks needed the dna samples to help find missing people in the area, while the equipment was only necessary to amplify his agency's technology.
this was so confusing. the dna test had nothing to do with what the email stated. was i being tricked by the number two hero?
i decided to stay the night in my lab to gather as much information as i could and to experiment on the sample, relying a bit on artificial intelligence from my computer.
this was definitely going to be tricky...
