𝐃𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 - 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐓 - 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐄

"Fix your posture, Grace! You look sloppy!" My coach shouted at me.

I had my singles skating test in two days, and I really couldn't fail. I had put so much effort into this. It had been my dream since I had been a little girl.

"Okay!" I replied, having to shout back at her so she would be able to hear me considering I had skated over to the other side of the rink. Stopping, I took deep breaths and remembered my routine.

I mean, I had that shit down to a T. I fixed my back, straightening it out as I looked ahead of me, the ice having marks from where I and others had skated. Slowly, I started pushing one foot in front of the other, starting my routine.

"It's just like doing a dance." I mumbled under my breath, trying not to think about what would happen if I slipped, or worse, messed up a step.

I mean, you'd think getting hurt on the ice would be worse than missing out a step, but for me, it really wasn't. If i missed out even a singular spin, like doing a double lutz instead of a triple, that woman would get on my back so hard that it would get close to breaking.

But she was like a mother figure to me, seeing as my mum had a raging drug problem and my dad had taken me away from her when I was 6, which ended up being the same year I started skating. My dance was to 'Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince' by Taylor Swift, which my coach reluctantly agreed to.

Apparently, it wasn't, as she had said, "a good song for a single skate." I had argued back, giving examples of jumps and things i could do that would fit the song. She had ended up giving in.

As i approached the first jump, a double axel, I prepared myself, evening out my breathing and getting ready mentally. I landed it perfectly. The rest of the routine went great, too. I hadn't messed anything up.

"Grace! That was perfect!" She exclaimed as I skated back towards her, and as soon as I had, she hugged me.

"You're gonna do great, honey." She told me sweetly.

"I really hope i do." I mumbled back, unable to breathe in the grasp of her bone crushing hug.

I did so not feel ready for it, and I was gonna remember it all too well. But, I guess, baby, let the games begin.
