THE PEACOCK( AN ETERNAL DANDY)
We sit down,
lost in our stray worlds
and hum
along with the day.
It is such a
natural facet
of who we are.To slump in the corners
of the car
and scold and reprimand
drooping eyes,
with little songs
under our breaths-
it's not habitual.
But it's natural
and happens.Anyway,
the hope is
to remain awake
today.
To behold
the very sight of you
(will be blessed indeed)***
Small talk
will not suffice.
The wonder of you
is such
that even if I ventured
with little songs
in praise of you,
I will be short of breath
first
and become
unnaturally trepidatious,
thinking
that there's no use in
employing words
only to withhold them
for their lack of agency
or to limit
one's gazes
to the roads and addresses
they are used to seeing.I can
deploy my best words
and have them
reach you
for sure
but you
are imperious,
full of splendour
and talent,
a bonafide
dandy;
you will predictably
shrug off
my scholastic
ways.
Those words
will hardly be
extraordinary for you.***
It was quite a sensation--
you
on the side of the road,
under the trees'
heavy, windy tentpole,
sitting on the wall
made out of sandstones.These incidents
seldom
happen in our lives. If you intend,
in moments of leisure,
to remember
that my gaze
searches for you,
don't break this news
to Dilkusha.He has captivated me
for quite some time
now.If you appear
out of the sylvan, verdant
woods,
come out
with a fountain
of your multicoloured hues.***
To have this alchemy
come into effect
will be marvelous.***
** Dilkusha refers to the beautiful bridge and adjoining area in the poet's hometown Lucknow
