ADONIS: THE FROZEN LAKE

My heart raced as I stepped back from Mila, the moment between us shattered by the sudden awareness of danger. I turned my head, scanning the surrounding forest, and the sense of foreboding grew stronger. My instincts screamed that we were not alone.

Mila noticed my shift in focus and looked around nervously. "Aiden, what's wrong?"

"Stay close to me," I said, my voice low and urgent. "I think someone's here."

The sound of rustling in the trees grew louder, and I could feel the presence of someone-or something-watching us.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. I grabbed Mila's bag and slung it over my shoulder, then picked up Mila's arm, pulling her along.

"Come on, we need to get out of here," I said, my voice tight with anxiety. "Now."

We sprinted through the snow, Bella running close behind us. I kept glancing back, my heart sinking as I saw the flicker of movement in the trees.

It wasn't long before I saw him-Lythel, one of the royal elf hunters  that I used to hunt with in the past, but was never really that close with, emerged from the shadows.

His eyes locked onto mine, and a cold smirk formed on his lips. He knew in an instant that I wasn't a human.

We elves could feel if primaril magic is close. And since he's a royal, he was born with the powers of lightning. A gift and a blessing only given to the chosen ones.

Before I could react, Lythel drew his bow and fired an arrow. The projectile whizzed past us, narrowly missing Mila. I yanked her to the side, my breath coming in short gasps.

"Get down!" I shouted, pushing Mila behind a tree for cover.

Lythel's arrows flew faster than I could keep up with. One scratched my arm, sending a jolt of pain through me. I gritted my teeth and fought through it, determined to keep Mila safe.

"Why are they attacking us?" Mila yelled over the chaos, her voice trembling.

"I don't know, but we need to keep moving!" I replied, grabbing her arm and pulling her up.

Just then, Lythel's next arrow found its mark-Bella yelped and collapsed, an arrow lodged in her side. My heart sank as I saw the pain in her eyes. Mila's scream pierced the air.

"Bella!" Mila cried, trying to run towards her.

"No, Mila, don't!" I shouted, grabbing her arm. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? We need to get to safety!"

"But Bella-" Mila began to protest, tears streaming down her face.

"I'll get Bella back," I insisted, my voice firm. "But you need to trust me and get to safety. Now!"

"Go!" I urged, giving her a shove towards the path we'd come from.

Mila looked at me with both anger and desperation and wanted to protest one more time, but I cut her off and looked her right in the eyes. "Trust me. Go get help. We'll be right behind you, I promise." I whispered, in a gentler tone.

She looked at my serious eyes, sensing that I was genuine. Reluctantly, she nodded and let go of my hand. "Please keep your promise." With that, she turned and quickly rushed and disappeared down the misty path.

I let out a heavy sigh and turned back to Lythel, who was now dangerously close to us. Quickly, I stood right in front of the wounded dog, shielding it with my body.

Lythel stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he observed me. "So you're not just any human," he said with a hint of realization.

I let my true form emerge, the ice patterns on my face, neck, and arms glowing faintly. Lythel's eyes widened with recognition, but before he could react, I unleashed my coldness into the air, making the weather around us drop.
