I couldn't sit still and just wait so I took to pacing around the group of scrubs and small trees where Dean had left me. As soon as I heard the gunshot my legs started moving me involuntarily. I ran towards the dark entrance, all of John's instructions leaving my head.
I had entered the cave a few steps before I faltered and came to a stop. My brain tried to make sense of the scene before me. Dean was stood with his shotgun still extended, the crumpled body of my brother laying a few yards ahead, blood pooling from his chest. I bearly registered the raging monstrosity advancing on Dean, I couldn't take my eyes off my brother. I let out a loud moan and sank to my knees causing Dean to whip his head in my direction, the look of devastation on his face telling me every thing I needed to know. The monster lunged at Dean. Before it could reach him a shot rang out echoing loudly around the Cavern. The creature roared in pain but kept moving, swiping at Dean with a long distended claw. A second shot sounded this time hitting the wounded Wendigo in the back of its head. An explosion of blood and bone rained down as silence disended on us. John Winchester walked towards his son with concern on his face. I was still sat on the cold stone floor. My eyes traveling back to my brothers lifeless body. Dean took a step towards me shrugging of his Dads ministrations but I held up my hands "Don't" my voice was surprisingly firm. I crawled across to where Tony lay and lay his head in my lap. I stroked his dirty damp curls away from his face and allowed my tears to finally fall.Dean couldn't comprehend what had happened. Tony was free he'd made it out. Yet here he was watching the bullets tear into the boys chest, the blood started to spred instantly. The look of panic on Tony's face as he crumpled to the floor would haunt him for a long time. The roars of the Wendigo faded into insignificance, he'd just shot Tony, he'd just killed Amy's brother. The moan from behind him pulled Dean back to reality. The look on Amy's face, as they locked eyes momentarily, broke him apart. He felt the Wendigo start to rush him but he didn't move away. Let the bastard have him, it was all that he deserved. Once John had dispenced with the monster it wasn't relief Dean felt but an ominous sence of dread. Amy's voice had left him feeling cold as she moved away from him to cradle her brothers lifeless form.
"What the hell happened here boy" his Dad whispered.
"I..I don't know, he wasn't...I mean he just appeared" Dean let out a sob his Dad put his hand on his shoulder and gave it a tight squeeze. "Accidents happen son. In our line of work we can't avoid collateral damage"
"No Dad, this is on me. I did this. I killed him" Dean couldn't stand the oppressive atmosphere any longer. The smell of gun smoke mixed with the stench of the monster and the sound of Amy's quiet crys made his stomach church. He pushed past his Dad and strode quickly out into the light.
Once outside he sank to his knees taking in giant gulps of air.
His legs were starting to hurt from his uncomfortable position when movement in the cave entrance caught his eye. He raised his head and watched his Dad emerge carefully carrying Tony's body. Amy followed behind a couple of steps. Dean didn't think it was possible to feel any worse in that moment until he took in Amy's hunched posture and tear stained face. He got quickly to his feet ignoring the protest from his muscles. He needed to get to Amy he needed to feel her in his arms. He stopped short when she took a couple of steps to place herself behind his Dad, never once looking at him, her eyes remaining locked on the ground. John looked at his son with sympathy and gave his head a small shake. Dean had to watch the tears stream silently down Amy's cheeks, his hand itching to wipe them away, as her brother was gently lowered to the ground.I don't know how long I sat, gently rocking my twin back and forth. My tears wouldn't stop flowing and my body felt numb. The hand on my shoulder made me jump and I whipped my head around expecting to see Dean. Instead it was John who stood looking down at me, a look of compassion on his weatherd face.
"We need to go" his voice was soft almost apologetic.
"I'm not leaving him, I can't leave..." the words hitched in my throat.
"Its OK sweetheart I've got him"
I allowed John to lift Tony into his arms, his movements were gentle and he held my brother almost tenderly. We made our way outside, my eyes taking a moment to get used to the light after the dimness of the cave.
Dean lifted his head when he saw us and got quickly to his feet. I couldn't bare to look at him. He moved towards me and I instinctively stepped behind the protection of his father. I still didn't understand what had happened but I could not forget the sight of Dean stood, smoking gun in hand, aimed right at my brother.
Once John had put Tony down I once again sat on the ground and cradled his body. I could hear the two men murmuring but I paid no attention to what they were saying. "Amy, Dean and I have to get out of here" It was John that spoke Dean was still to utter a word to me and I was glad he was keeping his distance. "We're gonna get you some help ok but we have to be out of here before it turns up"
I didn't reply, I just looked up and met his green eyes so much like his sons and nodded solemnly. He spoke to Dean keeping his voice low "we'll call it in as soon as we get to the car, I'll give you a minute" then walked out into the scrubland in the direction we came from. I could feel Dean hovering behind me and I wished he would just leave with his father.
"Amy I.." He started
"Don't try to explain Dean. I know what I saw" he flinched at the hardness in my voice but I didn't care "you promised me Dean, you swore you would save him" I ran a tender hand through Tony's curls "instead it was you who pulled the trigger"
"Amy it was an accident I didn't mean to..." I couldnt stand to listen to his excuses I knew he hadn't done it on purpose, that he hadn't murdered my brother in cold blood but it didn't change anything. "It doesn't matter Dean" I cut him off "you killed him"
He dropped to his knees besides me and placed a hand on each of my arms. "Amy please listen to me"
"Don't touch me Dean" he dropped his hands quickly and lent back on his heels creating a little more space between us. "You need to go"
Dean didn't move he just looked at me the hurt on his face clear "please Amy don't do this" he pleaded.
"Go Dean, go now"
He stood up, I refused to look at him as he stared down at me for a long moment. "It doesn't have to be this way let me explain, let me help you"
I laughed bitterly "I don't need your help Dean. I've seen what happens to people you try to help. I wish I'd never met you"Amy's words were like a physical blow causing Dean to stumble backwards a few paces. He stood staring at her back as she went back to tenderly stroking her brothers hair. He had no idea what to say, what to do to make things right.
He still didn't know how Tony had managed to get between him and the Wendigo but what did that matter when he was still dead. His whole body ached with the need to touch Amy. To pull her head into his shoulder and to hold her close while she cried. He started in the direction his Dad had gone but stopped and turned back towards the grieving girl having to give it one last try. " I know you don't want to hear this but..." Amy interrupted him sharply "your right I don't want to hear you, in fact I don't want to even look at you" her voice got louder and more frantic with each word. She finally turned her head to look at him with cold eyes "I can never forgive you for this and I never want to see you again. I hate you Dean Winchester"
Dean just stared speechless at Amy's outburst. Unshed tears brimmed in his eyes. He turned and quickly stomped away. Just before he lost sight of Amy he stopped for one last look. She looked so broken and it was all his fault. He vowed then to never let anyone else get close. It wasn't the monsters that were the threat, it was him, he was dangerous. As he took his final look at his beautiful girl one lone tear escaped and tracked its way down his cheek."Heavens orders were clear Castiel. Dean and Amy have now been separated"
"That may be Jerahmeel but it does not mean I have to like it. The boy should not have had to die" the woman's normally bland features were now grim, moisture shone in her eyes.
"Now the connection has been made we knew the pull would be strong, stronger than us, we would not have been able to keep them apart for long. This way they will not try to seek each other out" Jerahmeel uselessly tried to wipe dust from his jacket sleeve.
"This will make things much more difficult when the time comes for them to be together. The barrier we have put between them will not be easy to get past" Castiel eyes locked on the retreating figure of Dean Winchester "I'm afraid this damage may be irreparable"
