again, i walk into the rehearsal room. last time, we picked the play Snow White, and this time we're gonna get our roles. they said we have about 3 weeks to get ready. that is NOT enough time!
my new friend Kurt walks over to me, greeting me with a smile, again. "hey, fancy seeing you." he chuckles, leaning his weight from one foot to another.
"yeah, like i cant be here," i sneer, crossing my hands. his face turns apologetic.
"come on, what are you so nervous about?" he asks worryingly, letting his arms droop by his sides.
"i cant read the script properly. and - and i stutter when im nervous. i dont know why im telling you this, but im totally gonna mess this up." i grumble, crossing my hands and looking down.
he sighed, crossing his hands too. "well, i think the theatre can work with that. im sure you'll be comfortable with everyone in no time,"
"yeah, right." i huff, crossing my hands. then i heard our teacher, Mrs. Rose.
"Gather up, Gather up, kids!" she smiled. she was already standing on the stage, and she was beaming. at least, from my point of view she was.
all the kids, including me, scuttled to the front of the stage where she was standing.
"Today will be our first rehearsal. we wont waste any time by speeches, so everyone, come here, reach your hand into the hat and take out a piece of paper. next to the hat are a couple of pencils, and you will write down what you want to audition as. i will be calling on each kid, and they will reveal who they want to be. for the next lesson, i want you to learn a song or a line your character knows and sing it." Mrs. Rose spoke calmly, before placing the hat on the floor.
i reached my hand into the hat and quickly took out the piece of paper, snatching a pencil. that's when i started to think. "who do i wanna be? do i really wanna do this?" i was nervous. nervous to the bone, dripping with nervousness. i then tried to write down "Magic Mirror". i sighed.
a couple minutes later, right after everybody finished writing down, Mrs. Rose started calling on kids. she called out a few, then kurt, then a couple more, then me. i wobbled over to the stage, clearing my throat.
"M-M-Mag-gic mir-mirror..." i sputtered out, then my cheeks flushed. damn it, did i have to stutter?
Mrs. Rose claps and smiles. why are teachers so over-friendly? it didnt make me feel better at all. actually, it made me feel worse, because now all the kids were staring at me. i felt my cheeks heat up further.
i quickly gathered myself and shuffled off the stage, and i was instantly met with Kurt patting me on the back.
" its gonna be fine, " he whispers beneath Mrs. Roses voice as she called on the other children. i shivered. it was quite embarrassing. more than that, actually. it was worse. not quite. a lot worse.
