The dreaded day, captain Bryces gathering for the Smiths. He has just had an encounter with Aimee Smith where she had made it clear she didn't think that Morton was doing enough. He hadn't taken her up on the offer to go for drinks, it had only been one night since they had been in the office together. Morton knew he had until 13:00 hours until he had to deal with the family.

He would have to tell the family that he didn't have any leads on the case, he would have to say that he had got the post-mortem that morning and it showed a high level of Ambein in their systems. It was brought to Jasons attention that there were two people in the family that took those specific sleeping pills had been Aimee and David. But he didn't want to jump to conclusions.

Post-mortem of Keith Smith;

Cause of death: Bludgeoned to death. Blunt force trauma.

Time of death: between 8pm and 11pm

Date of death: 12/04/20204

Other information: Keith Smith would have been unconscious when the brutal attack began. He would have died from the first strike. Blood was mixed with Emma's the same weapon used in both attacks. Tip of the blade found in Keiths right shoulder.

Post-mortem of Emma Smith;

Cause of death: Bludgeoned to death. Blunt force trauma.

Murder weapon: Emma Smith died from the mix of alcohol and sleeping pills in her system

Toxicology: high levels of alcohol and Ambein

Time of death: between 7pm and 8pm

Date of death: 12/04/20204

Injuries: 31 stab wounds to the face and upper chest, five signs of blunt force trauma.

Other information: Emma Smith had passed away by the time the attack had started. She had died from an overdose of the mixture of sleeping medication (Ambein) and alcohol.

After reading the post-mortem Jason feels almost relieved that neither of them had suffered they were already dead or dying by the time the attack had started, they wouldn't have been in any pain and that is information that he can pass on and hopefully give some peace. It sat uneasy with Jason that there were only two people who have access to those medications in the family and one of them was in the last person to see them that day by her own admission.

Hobbs words echo in his head, did Aimee just want to go for a drink with him to make sure she is forensically aware of what is going on within the case? Surely not, you would have to be incredibly strong to have done this to someone let alone two people.

The tip of the knife was found in Keith, and Jason still found himself thinking that maybe she did do it.

12:55 rolled around and the Smiths come to the station, all of them not all together. Just the four that had gone out for a double date the night of the murder. Their children in toe, David turned up around 13:30. He was high. It was clear to tell, he was late from shooting up in his car. He didn't want to be here anymore than Jason did. Jason was only there because Aimee said she would be ther, he wanted to see her but it doesn't seem that she is going to show.

Captain Bryce stood up to give his speech about how his friend will be missed and that they have the best men on the case, a sense of pride crawled up into Morton, he was the best it was confirmed by Bryces mouth now. His speech rambling on, that's when she came in. Not in appropriate attire for the event.

Even in a jumper that was unbranded and some tight fitting leggings, trainers that looked tatty and grubby. Jason could see from where he was next to the stage that she had been crying, her eyes were red and raw. Her nose running still, it was clear she had thrown her hair up in a way that not many woman could pull off but here she was. Still taking Jasons breath away. Even in an outfit that looks like she grabbed it off the floor of her bedroom floor and threw it on, and she still looked absolutely fantastic. he did notice that the confidence from yesterday had gone, the cool clam demeanour had totally faded away from her and she was this shell of a woman who had lost her parents.

He caught eyes with Hobbs he could feel her eyes burning into him, he shuffled to her and asked what the look was for,

"Funny that today when all eyes are on her she is a mess, but yesterday when she was hitting on you she was fine. Dressed up, with make up on. Yet today she is a hot mess with blubbering eyes. Morton you know what I'm saying...." Hobbs whispered. Jason knew she was right it was an interesting connection, was he just ignoring it because she was attractive?

Maybe.

"Maybe she is just realising today the reality of it" he said completely dismissing what Hobbs was saying.

"I just want to thank Jason Morton, who has been in this building everyday at 4 am just to look into this case, I know he will find the people who did this. Lets raise a toast to Mr and Mrs Smith"

As Bryce wrapped up his speech Jason made his way over to the Smith family just in time to hear Rebecca berating Aimee for her outfit choice of the day;

"Aimee can you not make an effort for anything, we know you're lazy but seriously this set about you. For one minute can you not be a selfish bitch for one day. You are an embarrassment to this family."

Jason can't let it go on anymore so he interrupts, "Miss Smith, Can I have a word please?"

"I've told you before its-" Rebecca blurted out before he interrupted her abruptly.

"Mrs Anderson I was not speaking to you, as you have made it perfectly clear your are not Miss Smith, but Aimee is. Miss Smith, may I?" He can feel Rebeccas eyes burn into him as he steps away with Aimee.

He leads Aimee into a small room with a couch and a little machine that made crappy coffee. He gestures for Aimee to sit on the brown leather bag that should have been put in the dumpster about 50 years ago, the sofa was older than both of the people in that room. He didn't know what to do now, he knew Aimee needed to get way from that situation.

"I'm sorry, I was harsh yesterday. But I overheard what was said out there and I thought you needed to get away" Jason didn't look at the young woman, he grabbed a box of tissues and put them on the table between the sofa and the seat that he eventually sat on. Jason wanted her to speak to him but she didn't, she was silent. He knew that feeling, so they sat not saying anything. An hour went by, and they just sat there.

His radio went off, calling for him. He answered they asked him to go and check on something in another room. He stood up and walked towards the door but voice stopped him in his tracks.

"Please don't. Stay please" the voice was timid, it was small and it was broken. He couldn't say no to this woman in this moment, not because she is stunning but because she needed him.

Jason jumped on the radio and said he was busy and would be out of call for the next while. "Room 382 is out off commission, I have a family member in need of support." He reported.

"Thank you, you can sit on the couch. I don't bite" Aimee said, he knew it was wrong she was vulnerable but he did, he sat next to her. Two hours ticked by, there was some awkward small talk but mainly silence. Then he did something stupid, something he knew was wrong.

"Do you want to get that drink?" The words left his mouth before he thought about it.

"Yes."
