"Come on, Dex, I dare you to do a cannonball," Biana challenged, her eyes glinting with excitement.

Dex grinned, flexing his muscles. "You're on!" He took a dramatic run and hurled himself into the pool, sending a splash that soaked them both.

Sophie couldn't help but laugh at her friends' antics, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin. The scent of chlorine mixed with the sweet aroma of the blooming flowers from the nearby bushes.

Just as Biana was about to retaliate with a splash of her own, the sliding glass door to the house opened, and a figure emerged, strolling towards them with a casual confidence that seemed to radiate from his very core.

"Keefe," Biana said, her voice a mix of surprise and something else—something that made Sophie's curiosity spike they probably liked each other she thought to herself.

The newcomer looked up from his phone, flashing a grin that seemed to light up the entire backyard. His eyes locked with hers, and she felt a strange jolt, like someone had just plugged her into an electrical outlet.

"Hey, Biana," he called out, not missing a beat as he sauntered over, his blond hair slightly damp from his own recent swim. His gaze shifted to Sophie, and his smile grew. "Who's this?"

Sophie felt a sudden rush of nervousness, her heart thumping in her chest. She'd heard of Keefe, of course—his name was whispered in the hallways with a mix of awe and caution. But she'd never actually talked to him before. "I'm Sophie," she managed to say, her voice quieter than she intended.

"The Sophie?" Keefe's eyebrows shot up. "You're Grady and Edaline's daughter, right? I've seen you around school, but I've never had the guts to come over and say hi." He winked at Biana, who rolled her eyes playfully. She wondered why he would be nervous to approach her, she was the most approachable one in her group

Before she could respond, Della's voice echoed through the backyard. "Lunch is ready, you guys!"

They all filed into the dining room, where a large table was set with a colorful array of sandwiches, chips, and fruit. Keefe, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, took the seat right next to Sophie, leaving no room for doubt that he intended to make the most of this opportunity. His energy was palpable, making the air feel charged as they settled in.

Leaning back in his chair, Keefe took a bite of his sandwich, glancing sideways at her. "So, Sophie," he began casually, his tone low enough that only she could hear, "are you and Dex an item?"

Sophie nearly choked on her soda. "What? Eww, he's my cousin!" she sputtered out. Dex looked disgusted form the corner of the kitchen obviously hearing Keefe.

Keefe's grin widened,"Oh! Sorry, bout that you guys seemed close." He leaned closer, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "But seriously, are you single?"

Sophie took a deep breath, willing her cheeks to return to their normal color. "Yeah," she admitted, "I just broke up with my boyfriend a week ago."

Keefe's smile didn't falter, but there was a flicker of something more serious in his eyes. "Ah, I'm sorry to hear that. What's his name?"

"Fitz," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the clatter of plates and the hum of conversation around them.

Keefe's smile faded, his expression shifting to one of genuine concern. "Fitz is your ex?" He took a moment to process this information, his eyes searching hers. "Well, I can see why you'd be hesitant to jump back in the dating pool, he tends to be an ass with girls. If I can ask what happened?" he said gently, his voice dropping to match hers.

Sophie nodded, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "It's whatever, he cheated on me." She tried to keep her voice steady, not wanting to give away the ache that still lingered. "But honestly, I didn't care all that much. He wasn't even worth my time." She said it humorously which was wierd cause she was usually shy with new people.
