——————————————————————————

But later that evening, as Keefe lay on his bed in his dorm, staring up at the ceiling, he couldn't stop thinking about how dumb he was. How could he have been so stupid? To think that someone like her could ever be interested in him? He was just Keefe Sencen, the troublemaker with the famous dad and the knack for making people laugh. And she was... she was something else entirely.

Girls like Sophie went for guys like Fitz, guys who were serious and could give them the stability they craved. He'd seen it a hundred times before—the pretty, popular girl and the funny guy who was always there to boost her ego when she needed it. That's all he'd ever be to her. (it's painful to write I promise)

But then, Fitz strolled into the dorm, his damp hair sticking to his forehead, a towel slung over his shoulder. "Hey, Keefe," he said casually, his eyes scanning the room before landing on Keefe's contemplative expression. "What's up with you? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Keefe sat up, trying to shake off his thoughts. "Just thinking about what to wear tomorrow," he said with a forced smile. "You know, for that hangout with Sophie."

Fitz's eyes narrowed slightly. "Wait, you're actually going out with her?" He sounded surprised, and a hint of something else—was it jealousy?

Keefe shrugged, trying to keep his cool. "It's just coffee, buddy. You know, as friends."

Fitz leaned against the doorframe, his gaze unreadable. "Yeah, sure. Just friends." He paused, tossing his towel onto his bed. "But if you ask me, she's still pretty hung up on me."

Keefe felt a pang of something—it could've been anger, or maybe just disappointment—at his best friend's words. He knew Fitz had a history of playing with people's emotions, but he didn't expect him to be so callous about it. "Actually," he began, his tone carefully neutral, "she said something about you that I think you should know." STAND UP FOR UR GIRL!

Fitz's eyebrows shot up. "Oh?" He leaned in, curiosity piqued. "What's that?"

Keefe took a deep breath, trying to ignore the sudden tightness in his chest. "She said that you guys weren't really that serious," he began, choosing his words carefully. "That you weren't worth her time."

Fitz stared at him for a moment, his expression unreadable. "What else did she say?"

Keefe hesitated, trying to gauge his friend's reaction. "That's it," he said, deciding not to reveal the full extent of their conversation. "It's just... she's over you, man. You should be too."

Fitz's expression grew thoughtful, his eyes drifting to the floor. "I know she's not like that," he murmured, almost to himself. "Sophie's too sweet and shy to say something like that. You're just messing with me."

Keefe's smile faltered. "I'm not," he said firmly. "She has the right to be mad if you cheated. Also why don't you tell me you cheated on her? We're best friends man."

Fitz's gaze snapped to Keefe's, his eyes hardening. "It's not like that, okay? It was a mistake, I was drunk at a party. She was hurt but it wasn't messy and we stayed friends"

Keefe nodded trying to hide his annoyance. "Okay, if you say so."

Keefe decided to change the subject, "So, what should I wear for coffee tomorrow?"

Fitz shrugged, a smirk playing on his lips. "Why do you care what she thinks?"

Keefe felt a flash of annoyance. "I'm just trying to make a good impression," he said, his voice tight. "It's not like I've had a ton of experience with this kind of thing."

Fitz laughed, slapping him on the back. "You're Keefe Sencen, the charmer of Foxfire. You don't need advice on how or to impress a girl who you say is just a friend." (I like fitz bashing but I don't enact to ruin their friendship over a girl)

Keefe rolled his eyes and threw a pillow at Fitz. "It's not like that, she's definitely not into me like that."
*eyeroll

Fitz caught the pillow, his smirk growing wider. "If you say so, Keefe. But you're the one thinking about it all night."

Keefe tossed another pillow at him, this time hitting his target. "Shut up, Fitz."he had to remind himself she only wanted to be his friend. "It's just... she's different, you know? She's not like the other girls we know."

Fitz raised an eyebrow. "Oh, so you do like her," he said with a knowing smile. "Well, I won't stand in your way. You're a better guy than I am."

Keefe felt his heart sink. He didn't want to be seen as a rebound or a pity case. He just wanted to be her friend. "Seriously, she's just interested in being my friend and so am I, she's just cool to hang out with I think." (keep lying to yourself)

Fitz shrugged, a knowing glint in his eye. "Whatever you say, man. Just stick with that, Sophie isn't all that sweet if she doesn't like you."

Keefe rolled his eyes, trying to ignore the twinge of hope that flared up inside him. "Yup, just friends."
