A/N Sorry for disappearing, things have been crazy and I haven't had much time to update. I got a job backstage for a local production of Mary Poppins doing quick changes and lighting, and it's going pretty well but I've been flat-out, sorry.
The newsies were all gathered around a bowl of colourful lollies. Race had his legs up on Spot's lap, much to the smaller boy's annoyance. Crutchie was asleep on Finch's shoulder and Elmer was batting Albert on the head with a pillow. The sound of the pulsing, bustling nightlife of New York provided the perfect backdrop to this particular gathering.
"Noooo! I don't want to!" Elmer whined as he was told his dare.
"You have to," Spot smirked, shoving Race's legs off his lap.
Elmer reluctantly plodded across the floor to the balcony, leaning over the edge. "I'm too gay to function, I eat dishwasher powder packets, and I also regularly crash mansion parties with pride flags and I don't give two shits who knows it!" he screamed into the dark night.
The room erupted in snickers, except for Jack, who was rolling on the floor cackling.
"Wait, Jack," Elmer began, trying to hide his embarrassed blush. "You're the only one here without a lover..."
"Or lovers," Race pointed out, getting up and kissing Elmer on the cheek. Elmer returned it, settling next to Spot and booping his nose.
"I know!" Albert bounced into Race's lap. "Jack, truth or dare?"
Jack pretended to think. "Yeah, no, I want a dare."
"Seeing as you're so lonely," Albert pouted dramatically, "I dare you to call a random number. Any number. Just pick."
Jack sighed, pulling out his phone and dialling whatever number came to his mind. He side-eyed
"Hello, this is David Jacobs, how may I help you?" a voice came on the other end of the line. The voice alone was enough to make Jack shiver with delight.
"Um... h-hi, I'm... Jack. Jack, uh, Kelly," Jack stuttered, sticking his middle finger up at Albert and Spot, who were smirking. "I... got dared to call a number, and... and it was yours, and your voice sounds real nice- I mean, I'm sorry, I-"
"Relax, Jackie," David laughed. "Your voice sounds lovely too. I want to hear you talk more often."
"Oh," Jack whispered. "So, where do you live?"
Crutchie facepalmed.
"Oh! I'm not a stalker, I promise, oh fuck, I'm sorry-" Jack rambled, falling backward onto the beanbags.
David laughed through the phone and Jack felt his knees go weak. "No, no, it's fine. I live in Manhattan, how about you?"
"No way! I live in 'Hattan too!" Jack gasped.
"Well, how about we go to that place down the street near Broadway, the bookstore-coffee shop place?" David suggested.
"W- how- I don't know-" Jack stuttered, then sighed. "Is tomorrow ok?"
"Sounds like a plan. See you tomorrow, at 7?" David asked. Jack could practically hear the boy's smile.
"Tomorrow," Jack confirmed.
