The plane ride was long and before I realised it I had drifted off to sleep.
'Anna? Anna, wake up. We're here' Lucian calls to me.
With his hand on my shoulder he shakes me lightly, pulling me from a pleasant dream about a girl falling for a guy who she'd only just met.
'Where are we?' I ask him.
'Come and look.' He tells me, standing in front of me with his hand stretched out for me to take.
I follow him as he guides us down the cabin of the plane to the door, already open for us to walk through. I squint as the bright light of the sun hits my face, followed by the intense heat. I'm glad I picked a summer dress. Looking at Lucian in chinos and a shirt, he must of been baking, not that you could tell from the smile on his face.
'Where are we?' I ask, looking around the small airfield.
'Mexico.' He replies.
I smile at him and take another look around. Even from where we were stood I could see the Ocean just to the side of the runway. I could smell the salty air, lingering around us.
'Can we go to the beach?' I ask like an excited child.
'Yeah, It's where we're getting the boat.'
'Boat?'
'Unless you fancy swimming to the island.' He retorts.
'Island?' I ask, sounding like an excited child.
'We have an island not to far off the coast. I prefer the quiet when I want to get away.' He smirks.
'You have your own island?' I ask as my jaw practically hits the floor.
'We.' He corrects.
Just as I was about to ask him more about his island a black car appears, as if out of nowhere. The driver emerges from the car in a full suit and opens the back door as he looks at us.
'Mr. Perez.' The driver smiles at Lucian.
'Luca.' Lucian says in one word, giving him a curt nod as he pulls me towards the car.
'You must come here quite a bit then?' I ask, noting he knew the drivers name.
'I have a very stressful job. I come here several times a year to unwind.'
Several times a year? Before this honeymoon I'd never left the county. I'd never been on holiday and here he was doing it multiple times a year. It was a completely different life to the one I was used to. But despite my utter disbelief of how many times a year Lucian managed to go on holiday I realised I'd never actually asked him about his job. I had no idea what he did that meant he could afford to live like this. It was like I didn't even know this man.
'What do you do exactly?' I ask, looking at him from my seat in the car.
'Depends on the day.'
'Come on. Tell me.' I push.
'Sometimes I buy and sell businesses. Sometimes I buy and sell goods.' It's not very interesting, but it can be difficult when I meet resistance.'
'Resistance?'
'Some people don't like what I do. A small percentage can be... Challenging.'
Why was he being so cryptic? Why doesn't he just tell me what he does and what he means without me having to force it out of him. It was like trying to get blood from a stone. I'd never met anyone so secretive before.
'What people?'
'The ones who are losing something they don't want to lose.'
'Like my father?' I ask, looking down at my hands.
'No, your father borrowed money from me. Money that he couldn't afford to repay. But that was in the past. Recently I've been trying to move into more... Legal endeavours.'
'So what you were doing before wasn't legal?'
'When I took over my fathers business a lot of the work he'd done wasn't exactly kosher. But that's how he built the empire I now control. Regrettably, your father was a lose end left over from my father.'
'Was he like a loan shark or something?' I ask, wanting to understand a bit more about this world.
'Or something.'
'Tell me.' I probe.
'He sure himself as a mobster. A king of the streets. It's what got him killed in the end, along with my mother. It's why I wanted to move away from that world. I didn't want to live looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life and I don't want that for you either.'
'You're not in like... danger, are you?'
'No.' He scoffs. 'And neither are you.' He adds.
I want to ask more questions. I want to try and understand, but before I can open my mouth to ask him anything else the car comes to a stop at the end of a Jetty.
'We're here.' Lucian says as he opens the car door, jumping out before he offers me his hand.
I wrap my fingers in between his as I pull myself free from the car to see a large boat at the very end of the wooden walkway.
'Is that for us?' I ask, following Lucians gaze.
'Sure is.' He replies, dragging me toward the large white boat with a crew of people waiting for us.
Even though there were at least five crew members on the boat waiting for us the trip doesn't take long. We approach an island within thirty minutes, making the crew seem a little redundant.
The boat pulls up to anther jetty, allowing us to disembark. As we walk down the platform and onto the sand of our own private beach the crew from the boat files off behind us, transporting boxes and our luggage to the single large house not to far in the distance.
'Is there anything else you need, Mr Perez?' One of the crew asks Lucian as the others climb back on board.
'That's everything. thank you, Peter.'
'Very well. Mr. Perez.' He nods to Lucian. 'Mrs. Perez.' He says, nodding at me before he turns and leaves.
Mrs. Perez... I don't think I'll ever get bored of hearing that...
'Wait, is it just us on the island?' I turn to Lucian.
'I wanted you all to myself while we're here.' He tells me.
I feel my cheeks redden at his words as he looks me up and down.
'So Mr. Perez, What's on the agenda for today?'
'Well Mrs. Perez, I am going to carry you to the house and give you an exclusive tour of the bedroom.' He tells me, giving me a pointed look.
'Oh yeah?' I smirk, pressing my thighs together, already feeling a heat setting in.
'Yeah.' He replies as he lunges forward, scooping me up in his arms.
