### Chapter 21 : Echoes of the Past

---

The morning started with a sense of urgency. Ahmed had been wrestling with a pressing business issue that threatened to undermine a major deal. The previous day, he had received a cryptic message that left him on edge: "You think you've won? There's more to come."

This message hinted at unresolved matters with a competitor who had been challenging Ahmed's business for months. Determined to resolve this once and for all, Ahmed called an emergency meeting with his legal and business teams. They worked tirelessly through the morning, analyzing every possible angle of the threat.

Ahmed's team uncovered that the competitor, Faizan's cousin, had been attempting to undermine Ahmed's contracts by spreading false information to clients. This discovery not only provided the evidence needed to clear up any misunderstandings with their clients but also opened up legal avenues to hold the competitor accountable for defamation and business interference.

By afternoon, Ahmed's legal team had sent a cease-and-desist letter, along with a notice of intent to pursue legal action if the defamation did not stop immediately. Ahmed also reached out to his key clients personally, reassuring them and providing transparent evidence of his company's integrity.

The swift and decisive actions restored confidence among the clients, and the competitor, realizing the legal consequences he faced, quickly backed down. The issue was resolved, leaving Ahmed relieved and ready to move forward without the shadow of this threat hanging over his business.

With the business crisis behind him, Ahmed was eager to enjoy a more relaxed evening with Ayesha. They attended a business party hosted by one of his major clients, seeing it as an opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues in a more informal setting.

The party was in full swing, with laughter and conversations filling the elegantly decorated hall. Ayesha, looking stunning in a deep blue saree, attracted many compliments, and Ahmed couldn't help but beam with pride. However, the evening took a dark turn when Faizan approached them.

Ahmed had stepped away briefly to greet another guest, leaving Ayesha alone with Faizan. Seizing the opportunity, Faizan leaned in close, his voice low but laced with malice. "It's impressive how you've moved up in the world, Ayesha. From Zain to Ahmed—a significant upgrade, wouldn't you say?"

Ayesha's eyes widened in shock. "What are you talking about?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Faizan's smirk was cold. "Oh, come on. We all know why you're with Ahmed. It's not love, is it? It's the comfort, the wealth. You've always been good at finding a soft landing."

The accusation hit Ayesha hard, and she felt her face flush with anger and hurt. "That's not true. You have no idea what you're talking about," she retorted, her voice shaking.

Just then, Ahmed returned, noticing the tension between them. His eyes narrowed as he looked at Faizan. "What's going on here?" he asked, his tone calm but with an undercurrent of menace.

Faizan straightened, trying to play it off. "Nothing, just a friendly chat."

But Ahmed wasn't fooled. He stepped closer, his expression darkening as he grabbed Faizan by the collar. "Listen to me, and listen carefully," Ahmed growled, his voice low and dangerous. "If you ever speak to Ayesha like that again, or if I hear you've been spreading lies about her, you'll regret it. Stay away from her, and keep your mouth shut."

Faizan, clearly intimidated, mumbled an apology, his bravado gone. Ahmed released him, still glaring. "Consider this your only warning," Ahmed added before turning back to Ayesha, his expression softening.

Ayesha felt a mix of relief and gratitude. As they left the party, Ahmed held her close, sensing her lingering distress. "I'm sorry you had to go through that," he said gently. "Faizan won't bother you again."

Ayesha nodded, but the encounter had left her shaken. "It's just... I don't want my past to keep haunting us," she said softly.

Ahmed stopped and turned her to face him, his eyes filled with compassion. "Ayesha, your past is just that—the past. It doesn't define who you are now or what we have together. We're building our own story, and no one else has a say in it."

Ayesha smiled through her tears, feeling the warmth of his words. "Thank you, Ahmed. I needed to hear that."

As they returned home, Ayesha felt a sense of closure regarding the incident with Faizan. However, the next morning brought a new wave of unease. As Ayesha checked her phone, she found an unexpected message from an unknown number. Her breath caught as she opened it—a photo of her with Zain, taken during their brief relationship, along with a cryptic note: "The past never stays buried."

Panic gripped her as she stared at the message, her mind racing with questions. Who had sent this? And why now? Ayesha felt a surge of fear. The photo was a reminder of a time she wanted to forget, and the ominous message hinted at more to come. She looked over at Ahmed, still asleep, and wondered how she would explain this to him.

The past, which she had tried so hard to leave behind, was resurfacing with a vengeance. As she sat there, staring at the message, Ayesha felt a cold dread settle over her. The shadow of Zain and her past loomed larger than ever, threatening the peace she had finally found.
