"See you tomorrow Becks" Bishop says as he heads off to his car.
It was a long shift, we had five call outs. All dealt with successfully but it just meant little rest time in between. I put my bag into the boot of my car and get into the driver seat. I start it up and head back home. It's 7am i expect Harry will call soon. Mia our daughter is an early riser.
I pull up on the driveway just as my phone goes off. Answering the FaceTime call I'm greeted by Mia's smiling face.
"Hi Mummy" she says.
"Hi baby, did you have a good sleep?"
"Yeah, I miss you"
"I miss you too baby. But I'll see you after school. I'm sorry I didn't get to say goodnight last night."
"It's ok. I know you are working" she smiles sweetly.
"What are you going to have for breakfast?"
Mia immediately starts giggling, she looks behind the phone she's holding and places a hand to her lips.
"What's so funny?"
"I can't tell you" she giggles again.
"You can't tell me what you're having for breakfast?" I ask
"No, I'm not allowed to tell you" she laughs.
"Hmm what if I guess?"
"Ok"
"Cereal?"
"No"
"Crumpets?"
"No"
"Doughnuts?"
She doesn't answer but starts laughing. Harry was always one to spoil Mia. He loves giving her treats and snacks. Sometimes it was sweet, other times it used to infuriate me, especially when they are packing away a pack of chocolate biscuits before dinner and then not eating the dinner I've slaved over. But that's no longer my problem.
"I can't believe it, you're having doughnuts for breakfast" I smile at her, her joy infections.
"Will you pick me up from school later?" She asks with a twinkle in her eyes.
"If that's ok with daddy?" Harry appears on the screen.
He nods "that's fine but can you bring her home by 6"
"Of course, Mia I'll see you after school"
"Yay! I'm so excited"
"Go and have breakfast and get ready for school. I'll see you soon. I love you"
"I love you too mummy" she smiles and cuts off the call.
It makes my heart ache that I don't see her all the time, but Harry is very kind and lets me see her as much as I want, plus we get every other weekend together. With my work it just works better for her to be with Harry as a main base.
Getting out of the car I grab my things and head into the house, time for a sleep. I make my way up the stairs when my phone starts ringing out. It's the chief of the fire department.
"Hello?" I answer.
"Scott, I'm glad I caught you before you sleep. I need to ask a huge favour" his voice comes down the line, sounding a bit stressed.
"What's up?"
"I need someone to stand in on tonight's shift. Would you be able to help me out?"
Internally I groan, last nights shift, another tonight and my scheduled one for tomorrow, three night shifts in a row can really take its toll on me. It's doable but just exhausting.
"Please, I'm really struggling to find the help, I wouldn't normally ask because of when you are on your shift pattern." he begs down the line, that's when I know he's desperate.
"Ok I'll help you out"
"Thank you! I promise time and a half plus an extra holiday day." His relief is clear down the line.
"No problem chief."
"Bishop is also picking up the shift as well" he adds.
At least that's one good thing, I'll have bishop with me. Sometimes going in to a new crew they already have their dynamics and you feel like an outsider.
"Anyway, I'll let you get on and rest up. Thank you Scott" the chief says hanging up the line before I can say bye.
Dragging myself into my room and fall down onto the bed. Really feeling the need to sleep now. Hopefully tonight will be a quiet shift.
