Becky's text woke me up last night, must have been a sixth sense or something because normally it's hard to wake me. I looked on the news to see if I could find out about the fire and it was headline news. It's huge! Scary to see it and know Becky is going to be running into it rather than away.
I'm waiting for her texts, I've only had the one from her first rescue. Knowing she's rescuing people, being someone's hero makes me so proud, but it scares me so much as well.
It's now nine in the morning, and I was hoping I would have heard more from Becky. But I know she's busy. Watching the news they show the hundreds of fire trucks that are all around the tower block.
The news reporter shares information about the fire and building, "The fire is spreading at a very fast rate. The cladding on the side of the building is causing the fire to spread. Just like grenfell the cladding on this building does not meet fire regulations. It was due to be changed at the end of the year-"
Ring! Ring!
My phone pulls me away from the news reporter. Mums name is on the screen along with a picture of the both of us.
"Hey" I answer
"Hi honey. dad and I have seen the news, is Becky there?"
Mums voice makes me burst into tears. The reality comes crashing down on me. This is the reality of being in a relationship with a fire fighter. We all hype it up to be this sexy thing, which the uniform and physical side is, but the fear of not knowing what's happening is far from sexy.
"Oh honey! I'm sure she's fine. She's not going to be taking unnecessary risks, she has you and Mia to think about" mum tries to comfort me.
"I know. She said she would message me when she can. I know she's already been in at least twice. She text when she came out the first time. But I haven't heard from her for a few hours now."
"Do you want me and dad to come to you?" She asks.
"Can you? I'm scared mum" my voice comes out shaky.
"Mario, get the bags in the car, we are going to Lessi's now" mums voice is muffled but I can hear her. "We are just leaving, we will be with you as soon as we can. Let me know if you hear from her ok?"
"Ok mum. Thank you" I hang up and look back at the news. You can see loads of firefighters rushing around in the background but I can't make out any of the names on the back of the coats.
I open up my messages and check I haven't missed anything from becky. Even though I know I haven't, because I have been checking the messages for the past hour. Surely she's come out again by now, she did say she would message every time she comes out.
My mind is racing, thinking up every worst case scenario. I look back to the tv, the camera man is zooming in on the fire and the size of it. Then it pans to the entrance where firefighters are going in, and some are coming out with people wrapped in blankets. I can imagine every single one of those firefighters has their families watching and waiting anxiously on them. Wanting them to come home safe today.
Becky's shift technically ended a couple of hours ago but every bit of help is needed. Plus Becky wouldn't be able to walk away from those poor people trapped. I just hope she isn't too tired, that's when mistakes can happen.
Another hour goes past with no news from her. Something doesn't seem right, I feel sick to the pit of my stomach. I see mum and dads car pull up outside. I rush to the front door and open it up, mum is quick out of the car and pulling me into a tight hug.
"Why is she not messaging me mum?" I ask, another stronger pair of arms wrap around the both of us, dads.
"She's probably just so busy and caught up in it all, she hasn't had a chance to get to her phone" mum tries to calm me.
