She always knew she would die heroically, standing tall and ready to take on whatever was hurting those she loved. But that all unraveled rather quickly. It had always been her perception that she could lay down her life for Bella or for her father, but neither did prove to be the reason she met her untimely demise. Ironic it was, her love for a man brought her to face death much earlier than she had perceived.

As she stood on the precipice of her fate, staring death in the face, Luella felt a strange sense of acceptance wash over her. She had never envisioned herself in this situation, but she was relieved it was her life hanging in the balance, not anyone she truly cared about. In that moment, a flicker of peace settled in her heart; all her life, she had been the protector, the shield for those she loved, and now, in some twist of irony, she was the one who stood alone.

It was not only an untimely death, but almost a cruel joke that the universe had played on her. She had battled her own monsters for so long, so that by the time she faced this one, she was already weary, her inside already dying from the weight of it all. Luella didn't care anymore; she wanted to be free of the pain that had lingered for so long.

But nothing did, so why should dying be any different? She took a deep breath then, preparing for the inevitable, but in that flash of lucid thought, she would rather it be her than anybody else. Even at the last moment of her life, she held on to the hope that perhaps her sacrifice would give peace or protection to those she loved.

Her heart pounding and the shadows closing in, Luella resigned herself to her fate, embracing the silence that was to come. She was prepared to leave this world behind, yet even in resignation, a question stirred in her mind as to whether she would ever be free.
