"Luella! Get up, we're going to be late!" Bella yelled through the thin door.
"OKAY! I'm up!" I yelled back.
I threw on a simple yet cute outfit for school, adding a leather jacket for some extra warmth. I don't know why, but it's always freezing in Forks—like living in Antarctica.
When I had my shoes on, Bella and I went out into the backyard just as our dad pulled into the driveway in our old, rusted truck.
Once I had my shoes on, Bella and I walked outside just as our dad pulled into the driveway in our old, rusty truck.
"Dad, I can drive us to school," Bella said, heading down the driveway with me following close behind. But in classic Bella fashion, she slipped on a patch of ice, pulling me down with her.
Dad gave us a concerned look. "You girls okay?"
"Ice doesn't help the uncoordinated," Bella muttered.
"Uh, Bells, hate to break it to you, but you're the only uncoordinated one here," I mumbled, earning a 'whatever' from her.
"That's why I got you guys new tires," Dad said, gesturing to the truck. Sure enough, there were four brand-new tires. "The other ones were nearly bald."
After an awkward silence, Bella said, "You got me new tires? No one's ever done that before." Dad and I exchanged a confused glance because, well, we'd never had a car before.
"I—I mean. nothing," Bella stammered, trying to recover.
"I'll be late for dinner. I'm going down to Mason County. A security guard at Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of animal," Dad said.
"An animal?" Me and Bella said simultaneously.
"You're not in Phoenix anymore, girls. They've been tracking it for a week with no success, so I thought I'd give it a go."
"Be careful," Bella said.
"Always am."
In the car
"So, Luella, heard anything about Edward?" Bella asked to break the silence.
"No, Marie, I haven't. Why are you so obsessed with him?"
"I am not!" she blushed in her defense.
"Yes, you are," I teased.
"Ugh, whatever. Why aren't you eating breakfast the last couple of days?" Bella asked out of nowhere. It was like she made me freeze. The thing is, I hadn't eaten anything in three or four days, except for soda and snacks here and there. Bella and Dad had gone to the diner all week, and I just stayed in my room and read.
"Uh, I-I don't know?" I tried to think of a good excuse, but I didn't have one.
"You're not doing what you were back in Arizona, right?" Bella pressed, her voice stern.
"No, no, I'm not," I lied, though it didn't even sound convincing to me. Back in Arizona, I'd had an eating disorder for years. I'd been a stick between age 10 and 16. And a month ago, right before we relocated, this girl made this comment about how skinny I was, so, unconsciously, I had begun restricting again. I just these days hadn't been in particular hungry, but coughing and sneezing; it had been as my allergies had been unlimited.
Bella wrenched me out of my sleep. "There, we are."
"Mhm, later, Bells," I muttered getting out of the truck. She said a quick 'bye.'
I scanned the parking lot for Jasper, Alice, or Rosalie. The first one I saw was Rosalie, and I snuck up on her, trying to startle her. But she whirled around unexpectedly, and startled me instead.
"OH MY GOD!" I shrieked, and she burst out laughing.
"You should have seen your face!" Rosalie teased, still laughing harder.
"Oh my god, Rosie, you actually gave me a heart attack."
Her face became serious. "What did I say about that nickname?"
"Sorry, Goldilocks."
"And that one too," she grumbled.
"Sorry again, cupcake—AAHHH!" I screamed as someone grabbed me from behind and spun me around. I instantly knew it was Jasper, and could hear him, Rosalie, Alice, and Emmett laughing.
"COWBOY, PUT ME DOWN!" I squealed. Jasper set me down, but very gently.
"Mornin', ma'am. How are you?" he asked, all innocent.
"Don't 'mornin' ma'am' me. You and Rosie just about gave me a heart attack. When my heart stops randomly, it's on you two!" I said, doing a terrible impersonation of his Southern accent.
"Well, I think your heart is strong enough. You'll be fine," he smirked.
"Fine, Cowboy, if you say so. Anyway, Em, Allie—oh, and Edward—how have you guys been?" I asked the group.
"GOOD! Oh my god, I love your outfit today!" Alice said, skipping over to me.
"Thanks, Allie. You're looking as perfect as always."
Emmett feigned a gasp. "What about me? Do I look 'perfect as ever'?" he teased, imitating my voice.
"That was the worst impression of me ever! And yes, you do look perfectly handsome today, Emmett," I said, laughing.
"So, you're saying I'm not handsome, but Hulk over here is?" Jasper joked, picking up where Emmett left off.
"Exactly. You're 'cowboy handsome.' But stay away from Emmett; he's rubbing off on you too much," I joked, and everyone laughed.
Rosalie teased, "Okay, you two are way too cute together. I'm about to barf."
Blushing, I was saved by the bell ringing. I yelled a quick 'bye' and headed to my first period class.
The day drug on, and by the end of it I was thoroughly exhausted. I made my way to meet Bella by our truck where she was peaceably reading—on top of the gold onion.
"Hey, Bells, why do you have a golden onion?" I asked bewildered.
"Oh, I won that in scien—" Her voice was cut off by the screeching of a van skidding directly toward us.
Reacting fast, I pushed her aside and dove under the truck, but the van came too fast. I felt like I was living in a dream as I watched the van barrel toward me. There were no flashing thoughts or memories of my life—just stillness. The calm ended when someone wrapped their arms around me and stopped the van with one hand.
I looked up. It was Jasper.
"Why'd you do this?" I whispered, accepting that dying to save my sister was fine. In truth, part of me wanted to die-to escape the eating disorder, the bad things in my life, and just find peace.
Everything faded to black. I vaguely heard Jasper calling out to me, telling me to stay awake, but I couldn't.
I woke up in the back of an ambulance, which I didn't need, but whatever. Bella sat next to me, looking scared, shocked, and confused. I wasn't sure why she was confused—it was simple to me: I'd almost been crushed by someone's van. When we arrived at the hospital, I was led to a bed, waiting for a doctor to check me out.
The doors burst open, and Dad came in, his face as white as marble.
"Bella? Luella? Are you guys alright?" he asked breathlessly.
"We're fine, Dad. Just chill," Bella said, trying to comfort him.
"I'm so sorry, Bella. I tried to stop," Tyler said to her—the kid who almost ran us over. Not sure why he was apologizing to her, though. I'm the one who almost got flattened.
"Why are you laughing?" Dad asked, noticing that I was chuckling quietly. I shrugged. I hadn't realized I was laughing.
"It's okay, Tyler," Bella said soothingly.
"It sure as hell isn't," Dad snapped.
"Dad, it's not his fault—" Bella began, but he cut her off.
"We nearly lost you," he said, his voice shaking. I don't know why he was saying 'we,' because I'd been the one who would have been the one dead.
I turned my attention as the doctor came in, saying doctor stuff. He leaned over, delicately probing the back of my head.
"You've got a nice knot growing back there, but your X-rays show no signs of a concussion."
"I'm so sorry, Bella, Luella. I'm really—" he began to say, but before he could continue, my dad intervened by drawing the curtain.
"It would've been a lot worse if Jasper hadn't knocked her out of the way," Bella interjected.
"Jasper? Your boy?" Dad asked, clearly puzzled.
"It was amazing how fast he got to her. He was nowhere near us," Bella filled in, and she sounded nearly incredulous.
I listened intently, my head spinning as I wondered how Jasper had reached me so quickly. The longer I thought about it—the more I realized. he wasn't. human. Not exactly. But there would be time to decipher that later. Dr. Cullen glanced again at his chart, clearly avoiding any further discourses on it.
He smiled gently. "As long as your sister is safe."
I had been killing time by pacing through the halls of the hospital until I found Jasper. He was. restless?
"Thanks for saving me," I said gravely. He seemed surprised by my sincerity. "You're not going to ask how you saved me?" he asked almost cautiously.
I hesitated. What could I say? 'Yes, I really want to ask because I don't believe you are human'? Something like that. Instead of all that, I said only, "Kind of but I won't. Thank you again, see you tomorrow." Saying this, I walked away.
Later that night, when we finally got home, I stood under the warm shower for a long time, feeling the exhaustion catch up with me. I crawled into bed and collapsed, not having the energy to stay conscious anymore.
The last thought as my eyes bade goodnight was just one name.
Jasper Hale.
1/4/15 I am not sure about the eating disorder stuff I feel like I really skipped over that and made it not a big deal so I am very sorry about that cuz an ED is not something to skip over so sorry about that.
