RING RING RING — I rolled over to the right side of my bed to turn off my alarm, groaning at the discomfort of having to go to school. Unfortunately, it's required. I reluctantly stood up and headed to the bathroom to get ready for what felt like prison: school.

I applied a light touch of makeup—just some mascara, concealer, and a hint of blush. I tried to fix my hair so it looked a little better, rather than resembling something that had been run over by a semi truck. My outfit was a bit plain, but that was fine; I didn't need to look perfect.

Bella and I walked downstairs, only to be greeted by a smoky kitchen and the smell of burnt food.

"Dad, are you okay?" we both asked in unison.

"Doing just fine, girls. And don't do that again; it's kind of creepy," my dad replied, a slight grimace on his face. I couldn't tell if it was from the smell of the burning eggs or from us being creepy.

"We were just about to head out, so umm... bye?" Bella said awkwardly before she disappeared out the door. Dad didn't even get a chance to say goodbye, which made him look sad—at least, that's how I interpreted his expression.

"Thanks, Dad, for trying to cook breakfast for us. Love you! See you later," I comforted him. I heard him mutter an "I love you too" before I headed out to the old rusty orange truck. The ride to school was quiet, aside from the growling and clanging of our aging car.

Once we arrived at school, most of the kids were staring at us, which made it even more nerve-wracking and uncomfortable. As Bella and I stepped out of the truck, I heard a boy yell, "Nice ride." Bella muttered a small "Thank you," even though we both knew it wasn't a compliment. We made a collective agreement to split up once we got our schedules. Mine wasn't too bad but could be better. I really didn't want many AP classes, but at least it meant I'd earn almost all my high school credits.

11th Grade Schedule:

1st Period: AP Math 11 Algebra2nd Period: Gym3rd Period: AP English 124th Period: Lunch5th Period: AP History6th Period: Culinary7th Period: Biology 11

I walked into my first-period class, a small room filled with about 20 students. I was greeted by an overly enthusiastic teacher who shouldn't be this happy at 7 in the morning.

"Hi there, dear! My name is Ms. Karry, and I'm your AP Math teacher. You'll be sitting by Alice. Alice, will you be a dear and raise your hand?" In the back of the room, a small hand shot up. I thanked the teacher and hurried to escape the stares of my classmates.

The girl sitting to the left of my table looked like a pixie—very small with short hair. As soon as I sat down, she turned to me.

"Hi, I'm Alice Cullen! What's your name?" she said with an excited smile. It was so welcoming that I smiled back and replied, "Hi, I'm Luella Swan."

"You're new, right? Along with your sister, if I'm correct?" I was surprised she already knew that, but I should have seen it coming; Bella and I were likely the biggest gossip in the school.

"Yes, my sister and I moved here yesterday from Arizona."

"Oh, that's so cool! I've never been there. How is it?" she asked.

"It's alright. Arizona is super hot, especially during the summer, and the winters are cold—it's very odd. The weather is pretty bipolar, and it rarely rains; it's honestly sad," I told her.

"How odd," she said, giggling. "Well, it just rains all the time here."

"Is this class hard?" I asked. She nodded and replied, "Yup, but I could help you if you need." I quickly nodded my head; I would take whatever help I could get. We chatted about various topics—fashion, our pasts, siblings, and a few other things. We became good friends in the short time we talked, and I was kind of sad when class ended because that was the most fun I'd had in a while. I sighed and walked out of the class reluctantly, heading to second period. Gym was fine; Bella knocked out a dude named Mike, which was probably the most exciting thing that happened.

After third period, it was lunchtime. I hadn't found anyone who had invited me to join them, so I decided to explore the school a bit. I made my way to the library, which seemed like a good place to hang out for the rest of lunch. I headed to the romance section, where I spotted someone—a boy with chin-length blonde hair, very pale and tall. He was browsing classic romance books, which just happened to be where my favorite book was located. As I approached, he turned to me and scooted over so I could reach Emma by Jane Austen.

"That is a good book. Ever read it?" the boy next to me asked.

"Yes, I have! It's one of my favorites," I whispered, turning toward him.

"What's your name, ma'am?" he inquired. I hadn't really noticed his accent until now; it was charming and made me feel a bit flustered.

"My name is Luella Swan. Yours?" I replied, trying to keep my nerves in check.

"Jasper Hale. I must say, your name is very pretty," he said, whispering a "just like you" at the end, probably thinking I couldn't hear it. I nearly melted at that compliment; I know I can't blush, but I felt like I could now.

"Um, thank you? Your name is nice too," I managed to say.

"Mhm, not as nice as yours."

"My name is a bit unique; I have a normal middle name, though."

"And that is?" he asked, intrigued.

"Oh, it's Rosemary. What about you?"

"I don't have a middle name, but I have two last names," he replied. "My full name is Jasper Whitlock Hale."

"Oooh, that's cool! To be honest, it kind of sounds cowboy-ish."

"You must be a mind reader because I am from Texas," he laughed.

"Wow, that was just a guess, but that's really cool! I've always loved cowboys," I admitted, realizing what I'd just said. He continued to laugh at my statement, but before I could respond further, the bell rang for the next period. We both said "bye" and went our separate ways. The rest of the day went fine, except for hearing Bella blabber on about Edward Cullen while we were driving to the diner. Dinner was fine—extremely awkward and silent—but the food was good, so there's that.

Once we got home, I changed and went to bed, and oddly, my last thought was

Jasper Hale.
