RING RING RING — I rolled onto the right side of my bed to turn my alarm off, groaning in discomfort from having to go to school. Unfortunately, it's required. I got up and headed to the bathroom to get ready for what felt like prison: school.
I put on a light layer of makeup, just some mascara and concealer and a smidgeon of blush. I tried to fix my hair so that it at least didn't look as if it had been run over by a semi truck. My outfit was plain, but that was okay; I didn't need to look perfect.
Bella and I went downstairs to the kitchen, which was filled with smoke, carrying the aroma of burnt food. Bella and I walked downstairs to be met by a smoky kitchen and the smell of burnt food. "Dad, are you okay?" we asked in one voice.
"Doing just fine, girls, and don't do that again, kind of creepy," Dad replied, screwing up his face. I didn't know whether from the scent of burned eggs or just our general creepiness.
"We were just about to head out, so umm. bye?" Bella said at the door, disappearing out into the hallway. Dad didn't even get to say goodbye; he looked sad-I think that is how his facial expression read to me, at any rate.
"Thanks, Dad, for trying to cook breakfast for us. Love you! See you later," I comforted him. I heard the slight mutter of an "I love you too" before I headed out to the old rusty orange truck. The ride to school was quiet, other than the growling and clanging of our aging car.

Already uncomfortable enough, most the kids stared at us once we reached school. Stepping out of the truck with Bella, I heard one of the boys say, "Nice ride." "Thank you," Bella said off under her breath. We didn't need her saying it, because we already knew that he had just been being complimentary to be offensive. We loosely decided then to go our separate ways when we got to our schedules. Mine wasn't too bad but could be better. I really didn't want many AP classes, but at least that meant I would earn almost all my high school credits.

I walked into my first-period classroom, which was a small room with about 20 students in it. I was greeted by an overly enthusiastic teacher-who should not be this happy at 7 in the morning.
"Hello there, dear! My name is Ms. Karry, and I'm your AP Math teacher. You'll be sitting by Alice. Alice, will you be a dear and raise your hand?" A small hand shot up in the back of the room. I thanked the teacher and scurried away to get out of the gazes of my classmates.
The girl who sat to the left of my table looked like a pixie: very small with short hair. As soon as I sat down, she turned to me.
"Hi, I'm Alice Cullen! What's your name?" she said with an excited smile. It was so welcoming that I smiled back and replied, "Hi, I'm Luella Swan."
"You're new, right? And your sister too, if I'm not mistaken?" I shouldn't have been surprised that he already knew; Bella and I were probably the biggest news the school had gotten all year.
"Yes, my sister and I moved here yesterday from Arizona."
"Oh, that's so cool! I've never been there. How is it?" she asked.
"It's all right. Arizona is super hot, especially during the summer, and the winters are cold-it's very odd. The weather is pretty bipolar, and it rarely rains; it's honestly sad," I told her.
"How odd," she said, giggling. "Well, it just rains all the time here."
"Is this class hard?" I asked. She nodded and said, "Yup, but I could help you if you need." I quickly nodded my head; I would take whatever help I could get. We chatted about various topics: fashion, our pasts, siblings, and a few other things. We became good friends in the short time we talked, and I was kind of sad when class ended because that was the most fun I'd had in a while. I sighed and walked out of the class reluctantly, heading to second period. Gym was fine; Bella knocked out a dude named Mike, which was probably the most exciting thing that happened.

Third period over, it was time for lunch. I hadn't found anyone who had invited me to join them, so I decided to explore the school a bit. I went to the library, which seemed like a good place to hang out for the rest of lunch. I went into the romance section and found someone there-a boy with chin-length blonde hair, very pale and tall. He was browsing classic romance books, which just happened to be where my favorite book was located. He turned toward me as I approached and moved over to let me access Emma by Jane Austen.
"That is a good book. Ever read it?" asked the boy beside me.
"Yes, I have! It's one of my favorites," I whispered, facing him.
"What's your name, ma'am?" he asked. Up until that point, I hadn't registered his accent; it was so cute, it made me a little flustered.
"My name is Luella Swan. Yours?" I replied, trying not to be too nervous.
"Jasper Hale. I must say, your name is very pretty," he said, whispering an ending of "just like you". Probably thinks I couldn't hear him or something. But really, nearly melted on that compliment there; I know I can't blush but seemed like it could then.
"Um, thank you? Your name is nice too," managed to say.
"Mhm, not as nice as yours."
"My name is a bit unique; I have a normal middle name, though."
"And that is?" he asked, his curiosity rising.
"Oh, it's Rosemary. What about you?"
"I don't have a middle name, but I have two last names," he said. "My full name is Jasper Whitlock Hale."
"Oooh, that's cool! To be honest, it kind of sounds cowboy-ish."
"You have to be a mind reader because I'm from Texas," he laughed.
"That was only a guess, but that's so cool! I've always been fascinated with cowboys," I exclaimed, after having realized my little faux pas. He kept on laughing over it, and quickly the bell rang for the next period. We each said our "bye"s, and we both headed our separate ways. The rest of the day went fine, except for having to listen to Bella ramble on about Edward Cullen on the way to the diner. Dinner was okay—super awkward and silent—but the food was great, so silver linings.
Once we got home, I changed and went to bed, and weirdly, my last thought was
Jasper Hale.
