Her vision blurred at the edges, fading in and out. Alice's eyes went vacant as she was pulled into a vision. She saw the youngest Swan twin coughing, but didn't understand why until the vision ended. As her sight returned, Emmett and Rosalie stood before her, their faces filled with concern. The rest of the Cullens were out hunting, and the two mates had gone ahead the day before to spend time alone together.

Alice was relieved they were all gone. This vision was inevitable—there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. Her best friend didn't have much time left, according to what she had seen. But no one could know.

She quickly dismissed the worried vampires, assuring them nothing was wrong. Careful not to dwell on the vision, she went through the rest of the night pretending everything was fine. When dawn finally broke, she had to leave her refuge and head to school—to see her best friend in pain.

"Luella, wake up!" Bella's voice startled me as she pounded on my door. I had woken up around 4 a.m. not feeling well, but the field trip was today, and I didn't want to miss it. I'd been ready for a while, wearing a light dusty pink shirt, jeans, and my usual Converse.

Like every day, the car ride to school is quiet and a bit awkward. Bella parks in the same spot where we almost got crushed by the kidnapper van. We both step out of the old truck to hand in our field trip slips. Mike heads toward us, walking stiffly like Frankenstein.

"Look! You're moving. You're ALIVE!" he says to Bella.

"...Yeah, false alarm," she replies absently.

"Actually, I'm glad you're not dead 'cause that would suck, plus I wanted to ask you—well, even though it's like a month away... I was wondering if you wanted to go to prom?" he asks, his voice nervous. Bella, though, isn't paying attention. She's staring at Edward, or at least I think she is.

"So what do you think?" Mike asks, trying again. "You want to go? To prom. With me." He repeats himself, finally noticing her blank stare as she gazes at Edward. When Bella realizes he's talking to her about prom, she looks horrified. I've been quiet this whole time, but I'm about to burst out laughing.

"Prom? As in a dance? I, uh—I have to go..." she stammers.

"She has to go to Jacksonville that weekend," I jump in, rescuing her from what would've been ultimate embarrassment.

"Can't you go another weekend?" Mike asks, clearly disappointed.

"Non-refundable ticket. Maybe you should ask Jessica," Bella suggests, clearly trying to escape. The conversation starts to fizzle out, and I take the chance to turn in my field trip slip to Mr. Molina.

"Ma'am," a voice says from behind, startling me. I jump about 10 feet in the air—it's Jasper sneaking up on me.

"Oh my God, Jasper, you can't do that!" I shriek, still trying to calm my racing heart.

"You're fine. Come on, let's get on the bus," he chuckles.

We board the bus and find seats near the rest of his family. I spend most of the ride chatting with Rosalie and Alice.

When we arrive at the greenhouse, I'm immediately drawn to the flowers. I love flowers so much. I'd planned to visit a flower shop yesterday, but after the van incident, I couldn't. I spot the most beautiful red roses I've ever seen, and as I reach out to admire them, a hand plucks one.

"A beautiful flower for a beautiful girl," Jasper says, handing me the rose. He gently brushes some hair from my face and tucks the flower behind my ear. Blushing, I grab another rose and return the favor, tucking it behind his ear.

"A rose for a handsome man," I say with a grin.

He smiles warmly at me. "I don't think I could compare to you, ma'am."

His words fluster me, and I nervously stammer, "I'm not sure about tha—" Suddenly, I start coughing, and it won't stop. COUGH. COUGH. COUGH. I feel like I'm going to throw up. I look down at my hand and see BLOOD. Jasper's voice is calling out to me, asking if I'm okay, but I can't answer. Everything fades to black.
