The edges of her vision blurred, fading in and out. Alice's gold eyes went vacant as she was pulled into a vision. She saw the youngest Swan twin coughing violently, blood staining her pale hands. The vision cut off abruptly, leaving Alice shaken and unsure of the cause but certain of the outcome. The grim realization weighed heavily on her: there wasn't much time left.

As her vision cleared, she saw Emmett and Rosalie standing over her, their faces anxious. The others were all off hunting; the two had gone on an advance the day before, to have some time to themselves.

Alice was grateful to fate that the others weren't there. This was a vision that was bound to happen—a point in time she could not change. Her best friend was running out of time, and no one could know. Yet.

"Alice, what did you see?" Rosalie asked. Her tone was full of anxiety.

Alice forced a serene smile. "Nothing important. Just something small. Don't take it to heart." She abruptly looked away, trying to shield herself from their inquisitive eyes, and directed the conversation toward more trivial matters. For her, the rest of the night was filled with strained silence, as menace wrapped itself tightly around her. With the coming dawn, steeling herself for that day and for the friend whom she couldn't save,.

"Luella, get up!" I startled at the shrill of Bella's voice as she was pounding my door. I was awake since 4 a.m. and weak from nausea, but today was a field trip day, and there was no way I'd stay back in bed. Already dressed in light dusty pink with a pair of jeans and my trustworthy Converse, I'd resolve to pull myself.

The ride to school was silent and uncomfortable, as it always was. Bella parked the truck in the same place where we'd had the near-miss with Tyler's van. We got out of the truck together, field trip slips waved in our hands. Mike Newton was the first one to reach us, his eyes wide with fake shock, his movements dramatically spasmodic.

"Look! You're alive. You're moving!" he chuckled to Bella.

"Yeah, false alarm," Bella said, distracted, staring across the lot at Edward.

Mike plunged on, oblivious. "Actually, I'm glad you're not dead 'cause that would suck. Also, prom's coming up... It's like a month away, but I was wondering if you'd... want to go? With me?" He would have been charming, had Bella been listening.

"What?" Bella asked, her gaze snapping back to him.

"Prom. You want to go? With me?" he asked again, his eyes bright with hope. I had to smother a laugh at the look on Bella's face.

"Prom? As in a dance? I, uh... I have to go..."

"She has to go to Jacksonville that weekend," I interjected hastily, rescuing her from further mortification.

"But can't you go another weekend?" Mike demanded, crestfallen.

"Non-refundable ticket," Bella invented quickly. "Maybe you should ask Jessica."

As Mike walked away, dejected, I turned my slip in to Mr. Molina. A quiet voice from behind me made me jump.

"Ma'am."

Spinning around, I found Jasper standing there, a slight smirk on his lips. "Oh my God, Jasper, you can't just sneak up on people like that!" I said, clutching my chest dramatically.

"You're fine," he said, chuckling. "Come on, let's get on the bus."

We boarded and found seats near the rest of his family. Most of the ride passed in light chatter with Alice and Rosalie, who seemed unusually attentive.

When we arrived at the greenhouse, I was immediately drawn to the vibrant flowers. Their beauty was a simple comfort in an otherwise chaotic world. As I reached for a particularly striking red rose, a hand plucked it first.

A beautiful flower for a beautiful girl," Jasper said, handing it to me with a soft smile. His fingers brushed my cheek as he tucked the rose behind my ear.

Blushing, I grabbed another rose and returned the favor, tucking it behind his ear. "A rose for a handsome man," I teased with a grin.

"I don't think I could compare to you, ma'am," he said warmly, the Southern drawl sending a shiver down my spine.

Before I could answer him, a fit of coughs seized me. Starting as a tickle, it rapidly escalated until my chest heaved and I gasped for air. As I glanced down, there was blood smeared over my hand. Jasper's frantic voice called out my name, but I was unable to answer. The world spun, colors blurring together until everything faded into blackness.
