As the news settled in, the weight of it began to seep into Sidharth's consciousness. The initial excitement, the shock of it all, slowly ebbed away, leaving him in a state of emotional turmoil. He was pacing his room, his thoughts in disarray. A marriage. His marriage. To Saana. He couldn't quite wrap his head around it, and yet, amid the chaos, one thing was crystal clear-he needed to talk to her.
He grabbed his phone from the nightstand, his fingers hovering over the screen as if it were an explosive device. His mind raced with a million thoughts-what if she was just as blindsided as he was? What if she didn't want this? What if she was as confused as he was? But beneath the apprehension was a feeling he couldn't quite shake, something that had been simmering under the surface for weeks. He needed to hear her voice. He needed to know where she stood.
Taking a deep breath, he finally dialed her number. The phone rang, each passing second stretching out painfully. Sidharth could feel his heart hammering against his chest, his pulse quickening with each unanswered ring. He cursed himself for not being more prepared for this conversation, for not knowing what to say.
Then, finally, she picked up. Her voice, soft yet inquisitive, came through the speaker like a gentle breeze.
"Hello?"
It took him a moment to respond, to push past the lump in his throat.
"Hi, Saana. It's me, Sidharth."
There was a pause on the other end, and Sidharth could almost hear the gears turning in her mind as she processed the situation. When she spoke again, her voice was calm, but there was an undercurrent of tension.
"Hi, Sidharth. Kaise ho tum?"
"I'm... I'm good,"
he managed to say, but his tone betrayed him. He wasn't good-he was anything but good. This conversation was about to veer off into uncharted territory, and he had no idea where it would lead. He swallowed hard, trying to gather his thoughts.
"I just heard the news. My father told me... about the wedding."
Saana's breath hitched, the sound so faint he almost missed it. But it was there, and it confirmed what he had feared-she hadn't expected this any more than he had.
"Oh... I see," she murmured, her voice quiet, as if she was speaking more to herself than to him.
Sidharth felt a pang in his chest, a mixture of empathy and anxiety. He hated knowing that she was caught off guard, that she might be just as conflicted as he was.
"I know this might feel a bit overwhelming, thoda Ajeeb lag raha hain tumhe!"
he began, choosing his words carefully.
"I didn't know our families were planning this until recently. I just... I wanted to know Saana, ki tum kya chahti ho."
The silence that followed was deafening. Sidharth could almost hear the pounding of his own heart, his mind racing with possibilities. What if she didn't want this? What if she was furious? The thought made his stomach churn.
When Saana finally spoke, her voice was laced with uncertainty.
"It's a lot to take in,"
she admitted, the vulnerability in her tone cutting through him.
"I never really expected this, Sidharth. Because hum just Sahil ke Shaadi pe hi mile the! I was just getting used to the idea of us being friends, and now..."
Her words trailed off, leaving an open-ended question hanging in the air. Sidharth's mind reeled as he struggled to find the right response. He could sense the fear in her voice, the uncertainty, and it mirrored his own emotions.
