Chapter 54: A Dream

As time went by, Lin An returned to the hospital and got used to working in Dr. Jiang's department. She didn't know whether to call Song Chengran a gentleman or a shrewd villain. They were in the same hospital and on the same floor, but she rarely saw him. On
the rare occasions when they met, she turned around and saw Song Chengran passing by her by chance. Her eyes would still follow his back, gradually going farther and farther. What
she didn't know was that all this was not accidental.
Song Chengran had been looking at her, secretly.
The coldness and alienation in his eyes were all blurred, leaving only a gentle and sour light that would melt even the cold air in winter.
Lin An was his unique and indelible mark.
Song Chengran hoped to part ways amicably, but he couldn't deceive his true feelings. He really missed her. Looking at her figure, his heart felt like it was bitten by a small ant, itchy and painful, but Lin An didn't notice it at all and was still chatting with others.
The moment they looked at each other unexpectedly, Song Chengran's heart couldn't help but beat wildly, and even his hands hanging by his side couldn't help shaking.
It was a terrible feeling that the shrimp soldiers and crab generals fought and were defeated.
The two hadn't made eye contact for a long time, and the sudden meeting made both sides a little unfamiliar. Lin An was the first to react, and turned his head away in panic, pretending that nothing had happened.
Song Chengran still looked at her deeply, and even forgot to react until he was dragged away by Doctor Xiaobai.
After being discovered by Lin An, he learned to cover up and pretended that he was just passing by inadvertently. After a few times, he felt that his behavior was really low and childish, so he stopped paying attention to Lin An secretly, and instead focused all his attention on work.
Song Chengran worked day and night, performed long operations for several days in a row, and had irregular eating times. Song Chengran finally collapsed successfully. He was sick and came with a fierce force.
It was a severe cold and acute gastroenteritis.
Lin An found out when she was chatting with Xu Lili. It turned out that Song Chengran suddenly fainted at noon. She was so anxious that she almost jumped up and ran to his office. She soon realized that the present was different from the past and her identity had changed.
"Ahem--" Lin An forced herself to sit down and pretended to be casual and asked Xu Lili what was going on.
Xu Lili looked very horrified, "Don't you know that Dr. Song is a workaholic? He does two ten-hour surgeries a day, and when he stops, he sends emails to his partners. He is tense all day and has no time to eat. Who can stand it for a long time!"
Lin An's smile was a little hard to hold on, and she hurriedly asked where Song Chengran was now.
It's ironic that she used to be the person closest to Song Chengran, but now she has to ask others for every little thing about him.
Xu Lili said that at this moment, Song Chengran should be in his office with an IV drip, and the head nurse is watching him.
Lin An lowered her head in thought. Xu Lili asked her, "As a former close subordinate, shouldn't you go visit Dr. Song?"
Lin An smiled bitterly. She wanted to visit, but someone didn't want to see her. "Isn't there a head nurse watching? I can't help if I go there."
Xu Lili narrowed her green eyes and approached Lin An mysteriously. "Tell me, why did Dr. Song transfer you somewhere else? Didn't you work well together before? Could it be that you were hungry and Dr. Song sent you away in a rage?"
Lin An was stunned. Xu Lili was really right about most of what she said. They chatted for a few more sentences, and then Lin An went to work.
She was a little absent-minded, always thinking about Song Chengran's affairs. After struggling for a long time, she felt that it was not impossible for her to visit Song Chengran in the name of a colleague.
Lin An arrived at Song Chengran's office and unexpectedly found that the door was not closed. She poked her head inside and found that there was no one in the office. The door of the lounge was not closed, and she walked in somehow. She saw Song Chengran lying on the bed with a needle hanging in his left hand.
Lin An's hair stood on end and she wanted to leave immediately. She was panicked and saw Song Chengran with his eyes closed as if he was asleep. Only then did she calm down. Looking around, Lin An's face fell. Song Chengran's bottle had been fully infused long ago, and some bright red blood was being drawn out of the infusion tube.
The head nurse was probably delayed by something and didn't have time to come over. Lin An immediately bent down to remove the needle for him. As soon as her hand approached him, her wrist was suddenly grabbed. She looked up in surprise and found that Song Chengran was looking at her with his eyes open.
Lin An didn't know how to explain why she came to his lounge. She only said softly, "I'll remove the needle for you."
Song Chengran didn't let go of her hand after hearing her words, but held it tighter. It turned out that he was not fully awake, and his mind was still a little unclear. There was no usual shrewd light in his eyes, and there was a circle of dark blue marks under his eyes due to lack of sleep.
"Lin An?" His voice was uncertain, a little hoarse, and a little nasal, which was unique to colds. Perhaps it was because sick people were particularly fragile. With such a warm hand approaching, he didn't want to let go.
He felt that it was very much like Lin An's hand, but he couldn't be sure. Because of the high fever, Song Chengran's head was very confused, and his eyes were blurry and unclear. The figure in front of him was shaking, and he couldn't see who it was.
Maybe it was the person he thought about day and night? Song Chengran felt sour in his heart, and he was almost sure that she was Lin An.
Lin An's heart felt like someone had rubbed it hard, and it hurt so much. I've never seen Song Chengran so bad at taking care of himself before. Why did he get seriously ill as soon as she left?
The hand that Song Chengran was holding Lin An was the one where the needle was inserted. The blue veins on the back of his hand bulged vigorously. Lin An saw that the blood was flowing backwards, and she became even more anxious. Lin An couldn't help but soften her voice and asked him to be good and let go.
"Yeah." Her voice inexplicably made him feel at ease. Song Chengran responded in a daze and obediently let go to let her remove the needle.
Lin An felt angry and funny. Such a big man could actually be so childish when he was sick, which was very different from the usual serious and powerful image of Dr. Song.
"Why don't you take good care of yourself? You are so tired that you caught a cold." Lin An muttered softly and touched his forehead. The
fever was slowly subsiding. "You don't even know how to eat. You deserve to faint from hunger." Lin An put his hand into the quilt and pinched the corner of the quilt carefully. Song Chengran listened to her chattering, tilted his head slightly and kept looking at her. He didn't know how much he remembered in his muddled head.
Song Chengran's lips were pale and a little dry due to lack of water. Lin An was going to pour him a glass of water. Just as she was about to stand up, her wrist was pulled by a familiar force. Looking back, she saw Song Chengran frowning at her, with a hint of reluctance.
Song Chengran didn't want her to leave. That was what he thought in his heart. He couldn't figure out the deeper reason.
Lin An coaxed him into pouring him some water. Song Chengran understood what she said in his confusion, so he brought the water over and drank it obediently. After the
warm water went down his throat, his whole body seemed to warm up. Because of his serious illness, he didn't have to worry about the mess for the time being. He was no longer stubborn and unmoved. His dull, gray and decadent life began to have new colors.
Song Chengran suddenly felt a sense of relief, and everything around him was soft. He just wanted to stay lazily with Lin An.
"Lin An..." Song Chengran didn't know what to say. Lin An came closer but couldn't hear clearly. She only heard him calling her name.
Considering that Song Chengran was still sick, Lin An patted his arm gently to soothe him to sleep.
Slowly, Song Chengran felt that his body became very light, as if he could float. His eyelids became heavier and heavier, and his thoughts slipped away bit by bit.
When he woke up again, he found that it was Doctor Xiaobai in front of him. Song Chengran felt a little headache. The memory was like smoke and mist, like reality and dream.
Song Chengran asked Doctor Xiaobai if he had pulled out the needle.
Doctor Xiaobai remembered what Lin An said before he left, and he nodded resolutely, "Yes!"
Song Chengran suddenly felt like he had something stuck in his throat, and his handsome face showed an obvious absent-mindedness. In the past, he could accept the memory even if it was mixed with sadness. But now, apart from disappointment and uneasiness, he could no longer feel anything else.
His heart twitched and went deep into his bones. The pain seemed to not belong to him.
It turned out to be just a dream.
