The clouds hung low and mist drifted through the forest. Lupa arrived at Ravine High School and noticed David lying on his old truck. Her motorbike approached to park next to David's truck. She switched off her motorbike, removed her helmet and hairband, shook out her hair, and then turned to David.
"Hey, good morning," he said.
"Hey," she replied.
She swung her leg off the motorbike, pushed its stand with her foot, and walked. David followed her.
"Did you hear the shots last night, around midnight?" he asked.
"I didn't hear them. Where did you hear it from?" she replied.
"I heard shots near the hill at around midnight. I looked out the window in my bedroom and saw a flickering light through the front of the forest. Today, in the morning, I found truck tracks in the mud where a vehicle had been," he said.
"Please don't go outside at that time of night," she said.
"Ok, I won't go out at night," he replied.
An hour later, the bell meant lunchtime. Lupa walked into the cafeteria, sat down to eat her lunch, and David found her. He came to sit opposite her. Lupa noticed Dan sitting with a group of boys who kept staring at her, but she ignored them. She looked around to try to find Noah, but he wasn't there.
"Do you know where Noah is?" she whispered.
"I don't know, I didn't see him today," he whispered.
All students' attention turned to the speaker and Lupa listened to the announcement.
"ATTENTION PLEASE! GO STRAIGHT HOME BEFORE 3 PM. A BAD STORM IS COMING. ONCE YOU FINISH LUNCH, PLEASE GO HOME NOW. ALL AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS ARE CANCELLED. YOU WILL BE BACK NEXT MONDAY. HAVE A NICE WEEKEND. STAY SAFE!" the speaker blared.
Lupa noticed Dan stand up and walk off, and a group of boys followed him. Lupa finished all her lunch at the same time as David stood up, walked to the locker, got her helmet, then walked out of school.
Lupa walked to her motorbike and noticed the tyre was flat and oil was leaking from the exhaust pipe. She touched the tire and noticed that it had been stabbed with a knife, and the fuel line had been cut, causing it to leak oil. Someone had sabotaged her motorbike.
Lupa turned and noticed Dan in a convertible car with the roof open, holding a knife in his hand and waving, showing off what he had. His arm was around his girlfriend, and a group of boys and girls standing around the car were laughing at Lupa.
Lupa was upset and then squatted down to try to fix the exhaust pipe but failed, then David noticed and told Lupa that she couldn't go home because her motorbike had been broken.
"They shouldn't do this. They are stubborn. I can give you a lift home and put your motorbike in my truck," he said.
"Thank you. If you don't mind, could we stop by the store quickly because my mom needs something from there?" she said.
"No problem. I need to buy something too. Let me help you put your motorbike on to the truck," he said.
He went into his truck, switched on the engine, moved forward, stopped, changed gear, reversed, then stopped he walked back to help her push her motorbike on to his truck. She picked it up without his help and put it in the bed of the truck. He watched what she was doing and his jaw dropped as she picked up her motorbike.
"WOW, how did you do it without my help?" he said
Lupa is silent, not answering his questions
David strapped her motorbike down to make sure it didn't fall. They placed the helmets in the back of the cab.
Lupa went to the passenger side and opened the door and saw a mess inside, some toys had been left there.
"Sorry for the mess the toy truck is my daughters" he said tidying up.
Lupa is now aware that David has a daughter.
"I didn't know you had a daughter". She says
David started the drive to exit the school and go towards the shop.
" Actually, I have two daughters. Their mum abandoned them when they were toddlers, and now I look after them full time and my neighbour helps out when I go to school and work," he said
"Oh do the school know about it?" she said
" They only think that they are my sisters, I don't want anyone to know because I want them to be safe," he said
" Oh I won't tell them about it," she said
Arriving at the small shop David parked out front.
They locked up the truck and walked into the small shop, Lupa got a list out of her pocket, picked up a basket and headed in.
She needed to get flour, eggs, milk, butter and fruit. David carried milk, bread and jam in his arms and then went to the cashier to pay. Lupa noticed another black truck approach the front of the shop and pull up next to David's truck. She hears the roar of their truck, they get out and stand around together talking. They look like a group of hunters.
They walk in to get their snacks and drinks, Lupa and David finish what they are doing and exit the shop. Walking out David notices the black truck's tyre treads.
"This tyre tread is what I found this morning," he said
They walk on either side of the truck. Lupa notices the smell of something dead in the black truck, she peaks in as she passes, looks over the back, and notices a chain with a blood stain and a trap with some blood on it, she also notices a claw on a piece of wire hanging there.
David switched on the rumbling engine. He reversed, changed gear and slowly approached the junction. He made sure no cars approached, then moved off. Lupa gave him directions to her home.
