'Warsaw Boy'
"Here we are again ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another wonderful season of PlusLiga!" The announcer's voice boomed into the crowded stadium.
His fellow commentator, Aleksy, grinned widely to the camera displayed largely on the screen. "Ohoho, tonight we're witnessing one of the most anticipated games in this year's playoffs."
It was now the year 2021 on a cold evening in Poland. Many had gathered in the national stadium in Warsaw to watch the upcoming volleyball game. After days of countless matches between well-known and rising teams in the league, it was finally down to two.
Suddenly, the crowd cheered loudly and both announcers whipped their heads to the players' entrance, watching as the herd of tall men made their way to the designated court.
"Look look! It's the monster cannon Ushijima Wakatoshi!" Even the speaker couldn't hide the obvious glee in his voice.
The players had finally entered the court and as if a sudden chill graced the arena, Ushijima walked in with a stoic expression, every step he took increasing the wicked aura surrounding the man.
Southpaw, Young Cannon, Spike Monster, Super Ace, Volleyball Idiot, the man had gained a multitude of nicknames over the years. The more he aged and the more he improved, the more things they called him in the court. His reputation often precedes him these days.
His partner sweat dropped at the child-like excitement, sighing before going back to doing his job. "Yes.. as we can see Aleksy here is a big fan. It's nice to see him back in Poland League after competing in the Olympics."
"Just amazing.."
He was, of course, talking about the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Even though Ushijima played for team Japan, he was widely talked about here in the Polish volleyball community. Being selected for such an important event like that was already an honor in itself, but winning the competition? You'd be held on the highest pedestal for the rest of your life.
The Olympics was a turning point for his personal and career life. He already had quite a successful position with his background of playing for Japan's U-19 and being apart of the national team for VNL leagues, so this was pretty much guaranteed. When Ushijima was told by his coach that he was selected for the Olympics, he was terribly excited. However, no one could tell as he simply only nodded to the information.
He flew home to Japan after 2 years of living in Poland, set to join the rest of the team for training a few weeks before the Olympics. Unfortunately, Aiya hadn't been able to join him as she was required to stay in the country for her job. Despite being used to Wakatoshi going out to other countries, this would be the longest time they were separated. The couple spent a whole week together, wanting to get the most out of each other's love before he left. In Japan they video-called each other every single day, sending loving messages to greet each other whatever time it was.
