She hesitated for a moment, the word heavy on her tongue.
"Enemies," she finally said, her voice soft but firm.
The word hung in the air between them, carrying the weight of everything that had happened and everything that might still come. Hook's expression shifted, a flicker of something unreadable passing across his face. He seemed to be searching for the right words, and for a moment, Bridget wasn't sure if he would respond.
But then, he sighed, the tension in his shoulders easing just a little. "I don't want that either, Bridget," he said quietly. "I really don't. I think we've both been put in a tough spot, and it's been hard to know how to handle it. But I don't want to be your enemy."
Bridget felt a small surge of relief, though it was tinged with uncertainty. "So, maybe after all this is over, we can start fresh?" she asked, her voice hopeful.
Hook nodded slowly. "Yeah, I think we can. It might take some time, but I'm willing to try if you are."
Bridget gave him a small, tentative smile. "I am."
As they sat in the courtyard, the tension between them seemed to lift, if only slightly. It wasn't a perfect resolution, but it was a start—a step toward mending what had been strained and broken. And for now, that was enough.
The next day, Bridget arrived at their meeting spot, ready to tackle another round of tasks assigned by Principal Merlin. After their conversation the previous evening, she felt a cautious optimism about working with Hook. But when she approached him, she immediately sensed something was off.
Hook barely acknowledged her presence, his usual casual demeanor replaced with a distant, almost cold attitude. Bridget tried to strike up a conversation, but he responded with curt, one-word answers, avoiding eye contact.
"Hook, is everything okay?" Bridget asked, her voice laced with concern.
He shrugged, not even looking at her. "Yeah, fine. Let's just get on with it."
The coldness in his tone stung, especially after their hopeful conversation the day before. Bridget felt a pang of confusion and disappointment. What had changed overnight? She thought they were starting to move past their issues, but now it seemed like he was pulling away even more.
Despite her best efforts, Hook remained distant throughout the day. He kept interactions strictly professional, sticking to the tasks at hand without any of the small talk or camaraderie they'd shared before. Bridget felt a growing sense of unease and frustration, unsure of what had caused this sudden shift.
By the end of the day, Bridget couldn't take it anymore. As they finished their final task, she turned to Hook, her voice firm. "Look, if I did something to upset you, I'd like to know. Because yesterday, we talked about moving forward, and today... it feels like you're shutting me out."
