The next day at Merlin Academy, the air buzzed with an unusual energy. Whispers filled the hallways, and every corner seemed to have students huddled together, gossiping excitedly. As Bridget made her way to her first class, she couldn't help but notice the strange looks being thrown her way. She caught snippets of conversation—mentions of her name, Hook, and... something about a scandal?
Her stomach churned with unease.
"Did you hear?" a girl whispered loudly to her friend as they walked past Bridget. "Apparently, Hook and Bridget—"
Bridget's heart skipped a beat. What was going on?
She hurried towards her locker, but as she reached it, a group of girls who had been chatting nearby stopped talking and gave her curious stares. One of them smirked, and another whispered something behind her hand. Bridget felt her cheeks heat up, but she tried to ignore it. She grabbed her books and shut her locker quickly, determined to find out what was happening.
As she turned the corner, she spotted Ella, who seemed to be deep in conversation with a group of students. Bridget quickened her pace and made her way over to her friend. When Ella saw her approaching, her expression shifted from surprise to something much more serious.
"Bridget!" Ella called out, waving her over. "We need to talk."
Bridget's heart raced as she reached Ella. "What's going on? Why is everyone acting weird? And why are people looking at me like I've done something?"
Ella sighed and glanced around before pulling Bridget aside. "There's been... a rumor going around since this morning," she said, her voice low and concerned. "Apparently, someone saw you and Hook leaving together after prom."
Bridget's stomach dropped. "What? That's ridiculous—why would that be a scandal?"
Ella bit her lip, looking hesitant. "It's not just that. People are saying you've been sneaking around with him for a while now. That you're secretly... dating him."
Bridget's eyes widened. "What? That's not true!" Her voice faltered slightly, the weight of the secret she and Hook shared pressing on her.
"I know," Ella said quickly, "but someone must have spread the rumor. It's all over the school. People are talking about how he left Uliana for you and how you've been... well, you know. Hook's reputation doesn't help either."
Bridget felt a wave of panic rising in her chest. She had been so careful, they both had. How could this have gotten out? "Who would even start a rumor like that?"
Ella's face hardened. "Uliana."
Bridget froze. Of course. It had to be Uliana. After their confrontation yesterday, it made perfect sense. Uliana wanted to make Bridget pay, to ruin her in the most public way possible. And what better way than to spread lies about her relationship with Hook?
