The next morning, Bridget had barely finished getting ready when she heard a soft knock on her dorm room door. Her heart sank for a moment, knowing it could only be one person—Ella.
Bridget hesitated, taking a deep breath before walking over to the door. She opened it to find Ella standing there, her expression unreadable but clearly harboring questions. She was still in her casual post-prom look, hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, eyes sharp yet uncertain.
"Morning," Ella said, her voice softer than usual, but there was no missing the tension between them. "Can we talk?"
Bridget forced a smile, trying to stay calm. "Of course. Come in."
Ella stepped inside the room, glancing around as if trying to gather her thoughts before she turned back to Bridget. "You didn't come to prom," Ella said, her tone edged with suspicion. "But... something isn't adding up."
Bridget swallowed, knowing this moment was coming. She had been able to keep the masquerade a secret during the night, but now, in the daylight, things felt more fragile.
"Ella..." Bridget began, but Ella cut her off.
"I saw her, you know," Ella continued, folding her arms. "This Eloise—she had your build, your posture. Even with the blonde hair and mask, something felt... off." Her eyes narrowed as she stepped closer. "It was you, wasn't it? You were there. With Hook."
Bridget looked down for a moment, realizing she couldn't keep this secret any longer. She slowly nodded. "Yeah, it was me."
Ella's eyes widened in disbelief, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "Why didn't you just tell me? I knew something was going on between you and Hook, but you lied to my face!"
Bridget winced, guilt washing over her. "I didn't want to hurt you, Ella. I didn't know how to explain it. Everything happened so fast, and... I didn't think you'd understand."
Ella crossed her arms tighter, her voice shaking. "You're right, I don't understand. Hook? After everything? You swore you'd never get involved with someone like him, and now you're sneaking around behind my back."
Bridget opened her mouth to explain, but Ella's disappointment cut deeper than any words she could form.
"Why didn't you trust me enough to tell me?" Ella asked, her voice softer now, more hurt than angry.
"I didn't want to lose you," Bridget said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're my best friend."
Ella sighed, shaking her head. "You should've just been honest with me, Bridget. I don't know what's going on between you and Hook, but lying only made things worse."
Bridget's heart ached as she realized the damage her secrecy had caused. She stepped closer to Ella, her voice full of sincerity. "I'm sorry. I should've told you from the start."
