The drive back to Sharon's house was quiet, the tension between the two women palpable. Sharon sat in the passenger seat, her mind racing with questions and fears she couldn't yet articulate. Y/N's hand rested on the steering wheel, her knuckles white as she gripped it a little too tightly, the muscles in her jaw tensed.
Sharon's neighborhood appeared peaceful as they turned onto her street, the summer sun casting long shadows across the well-manicured lawns. It seemed almost absurd that such a horrific encounter could happen in the midst of such normalcy. As Y/N pulled into the driveway and cut the engine, Sharon's gaze flickered to her front porch. It looked exactly as she'd left it, but now it felt more like a refuge than a simple entryway.
Y/N turned to Sharon, her eyes searching her face. "Are you okay to go inside?"
Sharon nodded, though she wasn't entirely sure of the answer. They both got out of the car, and Y/N stayed close as they walked to the door. Once inside, the familiar comfort of her home began to settle Sharon's nerves, though the lingering fear still gnawed at the edges of her mind.
They moved to the living room, where Sharon collapsed onto the couch. Y/N sat beside her, her concern evident.
"I've never seen you like this," Y/N said softly, her hand reaching out to touch Sharon's. "You're really shaken up."
"I can't believe she's alive," Sharon whispered, her voice trembling. "All this time, I thought she was dead, that we were safe. But seeing her there... it was like a nightmare I'd never woken up from."
Y/N squeezed her hand, her expression conflicted. "Maybe it was someone who just looked like her. I mean, after all these years, it could be a coincidence."
Sharon shook her head vehemently. "No. I know what I saw, Y/N. It was her. The way she looked at me... she knew who I was. There's no mistake."
Y/N looked down, her thumb absently stroking Sharon's knuckles. "If it really is Lisa, then we need to figure out what she wants, why she's back."
The question sent a shiver down Sharon's spine. What could Lisa possibly want after all these years? Revenge? Closure? Or something more sinister?
As they sat in silence, Sharon's phone buzzed again. She picked it up, it was from Derek.
Derek: "Hey, just checking in. Kyle's asking if he can hang out with his friends tonight. Is that okay with you?"
Sharon stared at the text, her heart sinking. Kyle. She hadn't even thought about him in the midst of everything that had just happened. The realization filled her with a renewed sense of dread. If Lisa was back, what did that mean for Kyle's safety?
"Y/N, I need to tell Derek," Sharon said, her voice firmer now. "He needs to know what's happening, for Kyle's sake."
Y/N's eyes flashed with something like hesitation before she nodded. "You're right. He needs to be aware, especially if Lisa's involved."
Sharon quickly typed out a reply to Derek, telling him it was fine for Kyle to hang out with his friends but that she needed to talk to him later. She didn't want to alarm Kyle, not yet, but she couldn't ignore the possibility that their son could be in danger.
"I'm going to talk to him in person," Sharon said, already standing up. "This isn't something I can just text him about."
"I'll come with you," Y/N offered, but Sharon shook her head.
"No, it's okay. I'll be fine. This is something Derek and I need to handle together. But I'll call you afterward."
Y/N looked like she wanted to protest, but instead, she just nodded. "Okay, but please be careful. And call me if anything happens, no matter what."
Sharon gave her a quick, reassuring kiss before heading out the door. As she drove to Derek's house, her mind churned with the potential ramifications of Lisa's reappearance. Every scenario seemed more terrifying than the last. And through it all, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something Y/N wasn't telling her, something that made this situation even more complicated.
When she arrived at Derek's place, she saw his car in the driveway. Her nerves were frayed, but she forced herself to stay calm as she walked up to the door. The house was quiet when she entered, the usual chaos of Derek's life with a teenage son and a pregnant wife momentarily subdued.
Derek emerged from the kitchen, his expression curious as he wiped his hands on a towel. "Hey, you didn't have to come all the way over. Is everything okay?"
Sharon nodded slightly, swallowing the lump in her throat. "We need to talk, Derek. It's about Lisa."
At the mention of Lisa's name, Derek's face darkened. He gestured toward the living room, leading her inside where they could talk in private.
"What about her?" Derek asked, his voice cautious.
Sharon sat down, taking a deep breath before she began. "I saw her, Derek. At the grocery store today. I saw Lisa."
Derek froze, the towel slipping from his hand as he stared at Sharon in disbelief. "That's impossible. She's dead, Sharon. I saw the death certificate. I told you."
"I know what you told me, but I'm telling you, it was her," Sharon insisted, her voice rising with emotion. "She looked right at me, Derek. She knew who I was."
Derek sat down heavily in the chair across from her, his mind clearly racing. "How could this be? I mean... if it really was her, what does that mean? What does she want?"
Sharon shook her head. "I don't know. But I'm scared, Derek. What if she's come back for Kyle? What if she wants revenge?"
Derek's expression hardened at the mention of their son. "If she's back, we'll handle it, Sharon. I won't let her hurt Kyle, or you, or anyone else."
"But how do we fight someone like her? Someone who was supposed to be dead?" Sharon asked, her voice trembling.
Derek leaned forward, his gaze intense. "First, we need to be sure it's really her. We need to get proof, something we can take to the authorities. If she's alive, we'll make sure she's locked up for good this time."
Sharon nodded, relieved that Derek was taking her seriously. "I'll go back to the store, talk to the manager, see if they have security footage. Maybe it'll show something."
"I'll come with you," Derek said, standing up. "We'll figure this out together, just like we always do."
Sharon felt a surge of gratitude for Derek's support, even after all these years. It reminded her of the bond they once shared, a bond that, despite everything, hadn't completely broken.
As they prepared to leave, Sharon's phone buzzed again. This time, it was a voicemail notification from an unknown number. With a sense of foreboding, she played the message, her heart skipping a beat at the sound of the voice on the other end.
"Hello, Sharon. It's been a long time. Did you miss me?"
Sharon's blood ran cold. There was no mistaking that voice. It was Lisa. And she wasn't just alive—she was playing games, making it clear that this was far from over.
Sharon handed the phone to Derek, her hands trembling. As he listened to the message, his face grew pale, the reality of their situation sinking in.
"She's back," Derek muttered, his voice tight with anger. "And she's not going to stop until she gets what she wants....or who."
But what exactly did Lisa want? That was the question that haunted them both as they drove back to the grocery store, determined to find answers. Little did they know, the truth would be far more terrifying than anything they could have imagined.
