Lisa let out a bitter laugh, though it was tinged with sadness more than malice. "Move on? Do you really think it's that simple? You don't know what it's like to be invisible, to have no one care if you live or die. Derek was the first person who ever noticed me, who made me feel seen. And you... you took that away."
Sharon shook her head, still trying to piece together the fragmented story that Lisa had woven over the years. "Derek never loved you, Lisa. You created a fantasy, something that was never real. But you could have found someone else, you could have started over."
"Started over?" Lisa echoed, her voice hollow. "There was no starting over for me. Not after what happened. After I 'died,' I became Samantha. I had to reinvent myself just to survive, but even that wasn't enough. The obsession never went away. It just... changed."
"And then you met Y/N," Sharon said, understanding dawning on her. "You saw her as your way back, a connection to your old life."
"I thought... maybe if I could just have something that was mine, I'd be okay," Lisa admitted, tears welling up in her eyes. "But it didn't work. Nothing worked. It all kept spiraling, and then when I saw you, I knew... I knew I'd never escape it."
Sharon felt a pang of pity for the broken woman before her. As twisted and dangerous as Lisa had become, she could see now that beneath it all was a deep, unbearable loneliness. But that didn't excuse the danger she posed, not just to Sharon, but to Y/N, Kyle, and anyone else who might cross her path.
"We're going to get you help," Sharon said, her voice soft but firm. "This has to end, Lisa. For everyone's sake."
Lisa's eyes darkened, and for a moment, Sharon feared she might lash out again. But instead, she slumped back against the cold concrete, all the fight gone from her. "There's no help for me," she whispered. "I'm too far gone."
Sharon was about to respond when the sound of sirens pierced the night air, growing louder as they approached the construction site. Detective Harris had kept his word—backup had arrived.
Within moments, the area was swarming with police. Officers quickly surrounded them, their weapons drawn, though they lowered them slightly when they saw the situation was under control. Harris himself was at the forefront, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene.
"Sharon, Y/N, are you okay?" he called out as he approached, his gaze flicking to Lisa, who remained motionless on the ground.
"We're okay," Sharon replied, though her voice was shaky with the adrenaline still coursing through her veins. "It's over, Detective. We got her."
Harris nodded, then gestured for the officers to take Lisa into custody. Two of them moved forward, cuffing Lisa's hands behind her back. She didn't resist, simply staring ahead blankly as they lifted her to her feet.
As they led her away, Lisa glanced back at Sharon one last time. There was no anger in her expression now, only a hollow sadness. "It never would have worked," she murmured, more to herself than to anyone else. "None of it ever would have worked."
Sharon watched her go, a mixture of relief and sorrow swirling in her chest. The woman who had haunted her nightmares for so many years was finally out of her life, but the victory felt bittersweet. Lisa was a victim of her own obsessions, trapped in a cycle of pain and self-destruction that had ultimately led her to this moment.
Y/N came to stand beside Sharon, slipping an arm around her shoulders. "You did it, Sharon," she said quietly. "It's finally over."
Sharon nodded, though the weight of the evening pressed heavily on her. "I just... I wish it hadn't come to this," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "But at least now, we can all move on."
Harris approached them, his expression grave but with a hint of admiration in his eyes. "You both did a brave thing tonight," he said. "This could have ended much worse, but you kept your heads and brought her down without anyone getting hurt. That's not easy."
"Thanks, Detective," Y/N replied. "We just wanted to make sure she couldn't hurt anyone else."
"And you did," Harris said. "We'll make sure she's taken care of, that she gets the help she needs. But you should both take some time to process this. It's been a long road."
Sharon nodded, grateful for his words. As the police began to clear the area, she and Y/N walked back to the car, the weight of the night finally starting to lift from Sharon's shoulders. They had faced the nightmare, and they had survived. Now, it was time to heal and rebuild.
As they drove away from the construction site, the first hints of dawn began to break through the clouds, casting a soft, golden light over the horizon. Sharon took a deep breath, feeling a sense of peace that had eluded her for so long. She glanced over at Y/N, who smiled at her, squeezing her hand.
"We're going to be okay," Y/N said, her voice filled with quiet confidence.
Sharon smiled back, the warmth of Y/N's words settling in her heart. "Yes," she agreed softly. "We are."
And for the first time in a long time, Sharon believed it. The nightmare was over. The shadows of the past had finally been chased away by the light of a new day. Now, all that was left was the future—a future filled with hope, healing, and the promise of new beginnings.
