They think that the side villain is really powerful but it turns out that the whole time they were just bluffing
Side character or pet was the macguffin everyone was looking for
There's a prophecy and the main character was thought to be the chosen one but it turned out that they weren't
The hero was accidentally working for the bad guy the whole time and the villain was the good guy
The villain was framed and in reality did nothing wrong
The one thing or person everyone thought was useless ended up on the villain's side or was captured because the villain thinks they or it is useful
The chosen one prophecy was a lie
The main character thinks that they have powers and so does everyone else but it turns out that the side character or best friend was the one with powers the whole time and was pretending that the main character had them instead
The forgotten side character who was there from the beginning was manipulating everyone and everything
The hero is actually the villain
Someone is revealed to be the best friend of the main character who faked their own death and changed identities
They thought that the villain was able to control a powerful object or person or plant or creature but it was the other way around
