Five hours before the selection

“Somi said that you scammed her again. Why do you keep on wasting money for that useless show?”

Jungkook has just arrived at the dining area. He sat down, grabbed his chopsticks and began eating like he didn't hear anything.

“I’m telling you, I won’t pay for that. You’re the one who used it so you’ll be the one to pay for it.”

He stuffed food in his mouth, munched and swallowed, quiet and continuous, while taking her words like usual. In in one ear and out with the other.

“Are you listening to me?”

“That’s all you’re eating?” He asked his sister when he saw that she’s only having a cup of mixed fruits.

She nodded. “Did you forget what day it is today?”

He rolled his eyes. “Twenty two is still too young to be getting married. They should’ve excluded you for now.”

“But I’ll be forty-seven next selection.”

“Then you’re not meant to be chosen. They always say that everything happens for a reason.”

“Then I’m not too young to be married if I get picked today.”

“Fine.” He continued eating. “The women in this family.” He scoffed.  “All you ever think about is getting married to the Kims.”

He felt a harsh slap on his back.

“Aw!”

His mother attacked him with her slipper.

“We’re chosen to serve a noble purpose. That’s the reason why you can have these food, you live peacefully without war and you have a comfortable life despite never trying hard for yourself. If you weren’t a Jeon, you won’t be so lucky. The least you can do is show respect.”

Jungkook just hissed and kept mum. He’s not in the mood for his mother’s tirades again. He doesn’t want his ears to bleed.

“After you eat, go to the grounds and help your brother and your father with the preparations.”

Jungkook filled up and immediately left their house to avoid more nagging. In front of the main temple, he saw his father and older brother, along with the other men in their family, setting up the grounds for the ceremony.

It will be the first time he’ll be witnessing the selection with his own eyes. Although he’s quite familiar with it since they’ve been taught everything about it at an early age. They were also shown footage of the ceremonies from the past. It’s a tireless tradition whenever they celebrate the temple’s founding.

Aside from his family, the crew of the National Television are also prepping within the area. The selection is a national event. Hence, the day is a holiday and everyone tunes in via a televised broadcast. He saw more people coming in.

“Jimin hyung!”

“Jungkook!”

“You’re early.”

Jimin’s eyes subtly scan the premises. “We’ll be doing a dry run.”

Jimin is a part of the ensemble that will perform a dance depicting the legend of the Jeons and the Kims.

“Will you be the lead?”

“No. Just a backup.”

“Who will it be?”
