The first thing you saw when you got out of your shelter was a bloody mess of 'something' right beside you.
What a brilliant start to the cycle.
The scavenger's body, or what was left of it, was singed, burned, and for lack of a better term, completely destroyed. The lower torso was blown to bits, with only a left arm still attached to the upper body.
Intestines and blood flowed freely from the open wound and chunks of its abdomen had been forcefully taken off. Its head was caved in by blunt force trauma and due to the heavy burn wounds plus the missing body parts, it would be safe to assume an explosion caused the creature's untimely demise.
You looked away from the corpse and sighed, Arti had really outdone herself with this one.
There was little time to dwell on the murder due to something happening up ahead. You moved forward, ignoring the increasing number of bloody patches on the ground. Artificer had to be in a fight or something.
Lo and behold, you were correct.
She was tearing at and mutilating a scavenger's limbs with her bare hands, yelling curses and other foul language at the crippled creature. Each scratch and slice of her claws tore a bit of skin off the thing.
"Arti..." You start, but your words held no impact as she grabbed the hilt of a destroyed spear nearby and slit the neck of the already dying scavenger and watched it bleed out before her eyes. "That better have been..."
She looked at you with bloodthirsty eyes, it would be best to give her a lecture later then.
Your cutthroat companion simply returned to her mutilation. Looking forward, you saw more corpses, with most of them having their limbs hacked off by various means.
Some were blown off by explosions, a few were lopped off by a spear and you even saw a leg that had been forcefully torn off with just Arti's hands.
"Shut your mouth and follow me" Arti had finished toying around with the scavengers and walked off, you noticed her holding the spear with a red ribbon that was in the shelter previously.
For a bit, you thought Arti and yourself were really bonding for moment back there in the shelter, but it quickly became apparent that you had a nasty habit of wishful thinking.
After cautiously stepping around the corpses strewn about the area, you both reached The Gate, though various questions swarmed around inside your mind, demanding to be answered.
"Hey," You chose your next words carefully "First of all, why were there scavengers here? And second, why couldn't you cross this Karma Gate? You mentioned this place being somewhere you haven't been to before."
Artificer turned around and gave you a blank look.
"Well, 'buddy', first of all one of us let themselves get tracked down by the remains of the pack back there"
You sheepishly looked to the side.
"And second of all..." She pointed her spear at the symbol on the wall and then at the barrier stopping you and her from progressing.
