"Tomorrow we will love each other a little more, and the next day, and the next day. And even on those days when one or both of us is having a hard time, we'll be here, where we are completely known, completely accepted, by the person whose every side we love wholeheartedly."~People we meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

As Hailey and Jay savored the quiet evening on their balcony, Hailey's phone buzzed, breaking the calm. She glanced at the screen and saw a familiar number flash across it. It was Sergeant Trudy Platt. A knot of concern tightened in Hailey's stomach as she answered the call.

"Hailey, I hate to do this to you, but we need all hands on deck," Trudy's voice was laced with urgency. "We've got a situation downtown. A high-profile hostage situation at a bank. Intelligence is already on the scene, and we could use your expertise."

Hailey felt a jolt of adrenaline surge through her. This was the kind of high-stakes case she used to thrive on, but she hadn't expected to be thrust back into action so soon. She exchanged a quick glance with Jay, who had already picked up on the tension in her voice.

"I'm on my way," Hailey replied, determination taking over. She ended the call and stood up, her mind already racing through the protocols she'd need to follow. Jay stood up beside her, his expression a mix of concern and support.

"Are you sure you're ready for this?" Jay asked, his tone gentle but serious. He knew how much this meant to her, but he also knew how much she had been through.

Hailey nodded, her resolve firm. "I have to be, Jay. This is what I do. And I can't let the team down." She leaned in and gave him a quick kiss, trying to reassure both him and herself. "I'll be careful."

Jay squeezed her hand, his eyes full of unspoken emotions. "Just promise me you'll call if things get too intense. Don't push yourself too hard."

"I promise," Hailey said, grabbing her jacket and badge from the kitchen counter. She paused at the door, taking one last look at Jay. "I'll be back as soon as I can."

As Hailey drove through the city, the familiar sights of Chicago passed by in a blur. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, a mix of nerves and excitement. It had been a while since she had been in the thick of things, but the muscle memory was there. She knew how to handle herself, how to stay calm under pressure.

When she arrived at the scene, the area was already cordoned off, with squad cars and SWAT vehicles lining the streets. The flashing lights cast an eerie glow over the tense faces of officers and bystanders alike. Hailey parked her car and made her way to the command post, where Sergeant Hank Voight and the rest of the Intelligence Unit were gathered.

Voight glanced up as Hailey approached, his steely gaze softening slightly when he saw her. "Glad you could make it, Hailey," he said, his voice gruff but welcoming. "We've got a real mess on our hands here."

Hailey nodded, her eyes scanning the scene. The bank loomed ominously across the street, its windows darkened. "What's the situation?"

"Five hostages, three armed suspects," Voight replied, his tone clipped. "We tried to negotiate, but they're not budging. They're demanding a getaway vehicle and a helicopter, or they start shooting."

"Any intel on who these guys are?" Hailey asked, slipping seamlessly into her role.

"All we know is they're professionals," Voight said. "No criminal records, no identifiable ties. We're dealing with a wildcard here."
