Hey guys I apologize for disappearing and the lack of new chapters the last couple weeks life got really hectic with university and work and I was very overwhelmed and had bad writers block but I'm back with a new chapter so without further ado here's chapter 24
—————————————————————————————————
The quiet of the morning held a certain stillness that felt like a new beginning—fragile, barely formed, and yet comforting. Hailey's eyes fluttered open to the soft light streaming through the blinds, casting faint shadows across the room. She lay there for a moment, savoring the quiet, listening to Jay's steady breathing beside her. For once, the silence felt like peace rather than a reminder of the things left unsaid.

But today was different. They had made it a point to try something new, something that felt both exciting and a little scary. They were finally taking steps, small but intentional, toward a place where the past wasn't an ever-present shadow over them.

Jay stirred beside her, rubbing his eyes as he turned toward her, a slow smile forming when he saw she was awake. "Morning," he mumbled, his voice rough with sleep.

"Morning," Hailey whispered back, smiling as she reached over to brush a stray curl from his forehead. "I was thinking... maybe we should go somewhere today. Just the two of us. Something low-key but different."

Jay propped himself up, eyebrows raised. "Somewhere like...a farmer's market or somewhere like...an adventure?" He tried to hide the intrigue in his voice but failed, and Hailey caught the glimmer of excitement that had softened the lines of exhaustion in his face.

She laughed, the sound filling the room with a warmth that seemed to break through the lingering tension between them. "Somewhere in between. A little fun but nothing too crazy. We could try paddle boating—or paintballing if you want to test your aim."

Jay grinned, his eyes lighting up. "Paddle boating it is, then. But you're paddling half the time," he teased, nudging her shoulder. She feigned offense, nudging him back with her foot under the covers. He grabbed her ankle playfully, pulling her closer until they were tangled together, laughing like kids.

For a moment, there was just warmth between them, a sense of lightness that hadn't been there in so long it felt like breathing fresh air after a storm. Maybe they weren't where they wanted to be yet, but for now, this was enough. They lay there, wrapped in the quiet, until Jay finally rolled out of bed, stretching his arms over his head.

"Let's get moving," he said, throwing her a grin over his shoulder. "I don't want to lose our spot on the lake."

Hailey laughed, rolling her eyes as she reached for her phone on the nightstand. "Yes, because paddle boats are in such high demand. I'll get ready; don't rush me."

By the time they had gathered snacks, packed a bag with sunscreen and water, and pulled on comfortable clothes, it was nearly mid-morning. The air outside was cool and fresh as they left the house, with that lingering autumn crispness that hinted at change.

They drove to the lake in comfortable silence, with Jay tapping the steering wheel to the beat of a song playing on the radio. Hailey leaned her head against the window, watching the trees blur past, her mind quiet and calm. For the first time in what felt like forever, they weren't just trying to fix things—they were just being, existing together without the weight of everything looming over them.

As they pulled up to the lake, Jay parked the car and glanced over at her, a mischievous look in his eyes. "You ready?"

She grinned, feeling a lightness she hadn't felt in months. "Ready as I'll ever be. Let's see if you can keep up."

They walked down to the dock, teasing each other as they clambered into the paddle boat. Jay insisted on steering, and Hailey rolled her eyes, but she couldn't deny the warmth in her chest as they settled in, the boat swaying slightly beneath them. The gentle slap of the water against the boat, the sound of birds overhead—it all felt like a moment stolen out of time, a memory they'd look back on with fondness.
