Nick wanted to give his boyfriend the world . Over the years, he'd learned that Charlie sort of hated his birthday. The idea of aging scared the crap out of him, so they always kept it lowkey—little dates, simple dinners, or just...cuddles and a movie.

But this birthday was a big one. It was Charlie's golden birthday. A day he'd been waiting for for years. When he was getting through recovery, he mentioned that one of his goals was to be totally fine and healthy by his 27th birthday. And while that was unrealistic, and they both knew that now, they'd made it.

He woke up early in the morning, far too early for it to be acceptable under any normal circumstances. He slowly slid out of bed and creeped out of their bedroom. It was hard to get Daisy not to bark, but the second he let her out into their backyard, she was more enthralled by the grass than she was by her dad being awake at the ass crack of dawn.

He put out all the ingredients he'd been hiding, and got to work on making Charlie's favorite thing in the world: Chocolate Chip Pancakes. He got fresh fruit too, because according to Charlie, they made breakfast more fun.

He smiled to himself as he thought about all the times that they'd slept in and cooked breakfast together. Charlie always loved to make fun of him for how much he loved cooking and cleaning, but being Charlie's pseudo-househusband was a pretty great honor in his opinion.

His own journey with therapy had brought him to realize that he wasn't responsible for everyone else's thoughts and feelings, or their happiness. But he still felt the urge to make everything perfect for Charlie. He deserved nothing less than the best at all times.

This led him to his plan for the day: To do things that Charlie had always wanted to do.

Obviously, they couldn't do everything on Charlie's metaphorical bucket list. However, he could do as much as he could to make the day as great as it could be.

He stacked the pancakes up, and by the time they were done, Charlie was padding down the stairs in his pajamas, rubbing sleep from his eyes and messing with his hair.

He quickly went over to him and kissed his jaw. Relishing in the way he smiled and grumbled a good morning.

"Happy Birthday." He rocked back and forth a bit. "I made pancakes!"

Charlie grinned. "I see." He yawned again, which made him feel...a little guilty. But only because he had probably woken him up earlier than he should've on a Saturday. "Thank you"

He kissed him, and they sat down to eat. He tried not to watch Charlie too much, but he knew today would be rough. Either way, he started to shovel his own food in his mouth while Charlie took careful bites. He looked happy, which was an immediate win for the day.

"So, I had some plans...for today. I just wanted to make sure they were all good with you?" He put his fork down and swallowed some of his water. He knew Charlie wouldn't like...blow up on him if it wasn't what he wanted but...the idea of that rejection made him a bit nervous.

"Yeah?" Charlie mirrored him, except his drink of choice was orange juice.
