"Yesterday's trial was very amusing, don't you think?" William said as he reached across the table for another roll." Of course it was unsuccessful but it made for a good show."

Jake looked up from his plate and nodded," I just wish that Marlo had been more agreeable, stupid girl."

William laughed," I'm glad to see that you didn't acquire some sort of likeing to her. Did you?"

"Of course not!" Jake spat out. He looked around the dining room for a moment and then back at his plate, he was in a terrible mood," I wish that I had gotten a picture of her shocked face when she found out that everything she knew was a lie. Heaven! Her whole life was a lie!"

William gave a satisfied grunt and then carried on eating.

Jake blew a piece of brown hair out of his eyes and then looked around the dining room again. It was such a relief not having to be nice to anyone, or having to smile, or cook, or even so much as glance at Marlo Hope. He took a deep breath and grinned.

Screech!  William's chair scooted back across the stone floor, "Well, I guess I will see you  later then, Jake." He gave a short nod and then ducked through the doorway and into the hall.

Jake got up and was half way out of the door when a voice told him to sit back down. He did of course sit back down because he identified the voice as belonging to Master.

"I have something I need you to do," Master whispered into Jake's ear.

Jake nodded.

"I want you to spy on Matthew," Master continued," Make sure that he is doing his duty and keeping Miss. Hope in her cell and out of trouble. Take care not to be seen or heard, for I don't want him to become suspicious. Do you understand, Mr. Fisher?"

Jake nodded again but when he opened his mouth to say something to him he saw that he was gone. It was not unusual for Master to disappear, he did it quite often actually. Jake shrugged and headed back to his room, when Master gave you an assignment it was meant to be done.

Marlo slowly opened her eyes and then looked around herself. She was still in Matthew's little hideout, which brought a sense of strange relief, but Matthew was not there. She sat up and blinked a few times and then she saw him. He was sitting in the armchair next to the lamp.  He balanced is chin on his palm and rested his elbow on the arm of the chair as if he were studying something. His eyes were focused on her but when he saw her stirring he leaped to his feet and was offering her his hand just like he did back in the dining room. She took it and was on her feet in a matter of moments, although  not as gracefully as he had leapt to his feet.

"Good morning, Marlo," He said smiling," Did you sleep well?"

She sighed," No, but it's not your fault. I just couldn't stop thinking about last night....."

He frowned," I'm sorry if I offended you, I shouldn't have burdened you more than you were already."

She shook her head," I do not regret saying that I like spending time with you, or that I would like to spend more time with you. I meant every word of it."

He lifted his head back up," Then what was it?"

" Everything that happened yesterday: the trial, my employer and customers, and mostly Jake."  she smirked," I suppose one shouldn't expect to sleep well after all that."

"When I first came here the same thing happened to me, but it was completely different," He said teasingly," We sure have a lot in common."

She smiled, "Oh, I know. Your experience being completely different than mine does make the situation seem like it occurs normally." She winked at him.
