I stood up from the couch and walked toward my friends—But stopped when a voice from behind called out.
"Hi."
I turned around.
And saw a handsome—no, very, very handsome—guy.
I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
He had dark brown eyes, dark hair, and a smile that could make anyone weak in the knees.
I was mesmerized.
I even forgot to blink.
My brain completely shut down.
But the moment I realized what I was doing, I snapped out of it and quickly looked away.
What the hell are you doing, Thea?! You’re staring at him like you’ve never seen a handsome man before!
Okay, fine! Maybe you haven’t seen one like him before, but don’t be stupid! Don’t fall for his good looks! Keep your cool!
I shook my head to clear my thoughts and composed myself.
"Yes?" I asked, keeping my voice neutral.
His smile deepened.
"I saw you the other day—defending that little girl. You were really cool."
For a second, I almost melted at his words.
Almost.
But I stopped myself just in time.
"Thanks, but I know I’m cool. Tell me something I don’t know," I said confidently.
His smile didn’t waver.
"You’ve changed a lot."
His words caught me off guard.
I frowned slightly, trying to recall if I knew him.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t recognize him.
So, I asked straight to the point.
"Excuse me, but do we know each other?"
At my question, he chuckled.
And my heart skipped a beat.
His little laugh…
It was so familiar.
Too familiar.
Like a ghost from my past.
Like him.
No, no, no. Don’t think about it, Thea! His smile just looks like his. It’s not him. Get a grip!
But no matter how much I tried to convince myself—
A cold feeling crept into my chest.
And then—
"Hey! Sage, you’re here?! We thought you wouldn’t come!"
Kevin’s excited voice made my heart stop.
I turned to him—
Then back to the guy in front of me.
"Sage?"
My voice is barely above a whisper.
I asked, as if I needed confirmation.
As if my mind refused to believe it.
Kevin laughed. "Don’t tell me you didn’t recognize him! You recognized all of us, but not him? He’s Sage—our friend. Your desk mate."
My body froze.
