Chapter 58

"Ma'am, we need you to leave the room so we can speak to your daughter." The officer spoke.

"My daughter isn't verbally communicating right now and you said yourself that you don't understand sign language."

"Why doesn't your daughter verbally speak?"

"If you look in her chart, you will see that she was in a very terrible car accident and it damaged her spine and the surgery to fix it made them realize her vocal cords were damaged. She isn't in speech therapy yet to recover." The doctor looked in the file and nodded to the officer.

"Okay. You can stay."

"Thank you." Katherine sighed and sat down.

"Now, Janet what can you recall from this afternoon?" Janet signed her response.

"She says that she was working on some schoolwork for her Chemistry class and she fell asleep when it became overwhelming." Katherine translated as she continued to sign. "When she woke up she was laying on the floor of her closet after Erice had resuscitated her."

"Why were you in the closet?"

"I don't know, but Mikey told her she had been hung up there."

"Hung? By her neck?"

"Yes."

"And you guys thought she was committing suicide?"

"Yes."

"But she wasn't?"

"No. She was confused by the whole thing when we woke her up."

"Did you guys see anyone when you went to check on her?"

"No. We heard a thud when we were downstairs and we ran to check on her."

"Was there any sign of entry or anything?" Katherine thought to herself.

"Now that I think about it, her bedroom door was wide open. Janet loves her privacy so she always has it closed."

"Maybe there are fingerprints on the knobs."

"I also brought the rope that was tied to her. I put it in this storage bag." Katherine handed it to the officer.

"Thank you. Is there anyone who we should look into as a suspect?"

"Geraldine Thomas and Lawrence Jackson. They've been causing a lot of pain to the family for a while."

"Okay." The officer wrote it down. "We're all working on this entire case and promise to help you."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome. My chief is actually on his way in now to speak with you about your testimony and other parts of the case."

"Okay." There was some commotion outside of the hospital room that grabbed everyone's attention.

"Get off of me!"

"Ma'am, you can't..."

"I damn sure can." Toni came into the room and immediately went to Janet. She sat next to her and hugged her tightly. "Ughh..I'm so happy you're okay. When Mikey told me what happened I almost lost it." Janet laid against Toni's chest. Toni kissed her head and face before holding her again. She sighed and looked over at Katherine. "I'm sorry for barging in."

"You're fine, sweetie." Toni pulled apart from Janet and smiled at her, but it fell when she saw her neck.

"It'll go away."

"It better. Can't have you out here scarred because of them." She gave her a small kiss. Toni turned to the officer.

"You're Toni Braxton, correct?" the officer asked.
