2. Checkmate, I couldn't lose

1989's POV

A few days have passed and I just got home from school. I had a ton of homework and studying. We were supposed to have a french test tommorrow. When it comes to french class- sitting with Midnights turned out to be better than I thought. She minds her own business, sometimes.

I was sitting in my room completely absorbed in studying. I was hoping that I would finish it as soon as possible and not fall asleep on my desk. My study session was interrupted by my phone. It was a message on our gc with Red and Speak Now.

Red:
HELLOOOO

I have a question!

What flavor of wedding cake do you think I am?

Speak Now:
Girl you've been dating him for like 2 weeks

1989:
Maybe chocolate?

I put my phone down and laughed to myself. I stretched and tried to focus again.

As soon as I finished all my school work I went to the bathroom to take a shower. It was already after 11 pm. I was so tired that I fell asleep almost immediately after I got into bed.

I was woken up by the sound of my alarm clock. Literally traumatizing. It was raining outside so I decided to wear a blue sweater and a pair of linen pants. I did my whole morning routine and then went downstairs. My mom was sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee.

"Good morning honey" she said with a smile on her face when she noticed me.

"Hi" I replied pouring myself a glass of water.

"I made pancakes for breakfast, want some?" my mom asked me. I looked at full plate and I swallowed loudly.

"I actually have to go, I don't wanna be late" I said. She nodded, said goodbye and I left the house.

I walked slowly with an umbrella in my hand. It wasn't cold, but the rain had a really bad effect on my mood. I was stressed even though I studied all evening.

When I entered the school I immediately noticed Red who was incredibly excited and annoyed Speak Now next to her. They were talking with Fearless and the new girl- Debut.

"Hi everyone, how's your wedding plan Red?" I asked, Speak Now and the girls laughed loudly, Red blushed.

"Oh shut up" Red said with a cute little smile. "I have a news!" she added and we looked at expectantly.

"I'm going to the annual end of summer party!"

"Wait how?!" Speak Now said shocked.

"My boyfriend got an invitation" Red proudly smiled. "I told you, he's cool and everyone likes him"

"I want to go too omg!" Fearless suddenly joined the conversation.

"You're literally a kid" Red said.

"Wait, why is this party so nice?" Debut asked confused.

"Every year one of popular people organizes this party and you have to be like really "cool" so that they would invite you" I tried to explain it, but the bell interrupted me "I have to go"

"See you at lunch!" Speak Now shouted I just nodded and walked away.

After a few lessons it was time for lunch break. It looks like Fearless and Debut have become friends, it's nice to see. I'm stressed because I have a French test right after this break. I'm just about to go to the cafeteria when I felt a pressure on my wrist. I turned around and saw Midnights.

"Help me" she said looking around and making sure no one looks at her.

"W-what?" I replied really confused. Why is she asking me for help? Oh my god.

"I have to pass the French test, the teacher hates me" Midnights said but she still looked unbothered.

"I can't help you, I didn't even study, sorry" I said quickly trying go away. Midnights pulled me closer to her.

"I didn't know you're such a liar, Nine" she whispered to my ear, I felt her breath on my neck.

"I don't understand what are you talking about, I have to go" I said breaking away from her grip, Midnights just smirked.

What actually happened?! It was really weird. She called me a liar, that was so rude.

I sat down at the table where the girls were already sitting. They all stopped talking and looked at me.

"Where have you been? The break is ending soon" Fearless said and Speak Now looked at me suspiciously.

"I was um...nowhere, what about Red? Where is she?" I said trying to change the topic.

"She's with her boyfriend, you know making out session in school" Speak Now rolled her eyes and continued drinking her coffee.

"1989 you look pale" Debut noticed "I'm gonna get you a piece of cake" she added and got up.

"I'm going with you" Fearless joined her. Now I was left alone with Speak Now, who moved her chair closer to me.

"Are you doing it again?" she asked me quietly. Speak Now was the only one who knew about my problems, she helped me a lot when she found out.

"No, I'm just really stressed today I forgot about eating" I told the truth, I never wanted to be at that point in my life again.

"Okay, If something happens you can always talk to me" Speak Now she said with a comforting smile. At the same moment Debut and Fearless returned to the table with plates.

"We have brownies!" Debut said with a big smile.

"Omg I love brownie! Why did you bring it to yourselves and not me" Speak Now said pretending to be offended. I laughed.

"Don't look at me like that, I'll share with you" Fearless rolled her eyes and Speak Now smiled victoriously.

When i finished eating I felt much better. I said goodbye to the girls and went towards the French classroom. I saw Midnights, she was talking with her friends- Lover, Reputation and Evermore. They were the most popular girls in the whole school, everybody knows them. Evermore has a younger sister- Folklore, she's her total opposite.

I was hoping Midnights would ignore me, she probably hates me now. I feel really bad that I can't help Midnights but I don't want to get into trouble for her.

The teacher started lesson, I was so stresssed, because of the test and the whole Midnights thing. She's sitting next to me right now, she looks really chilled out. Should I say something? Maybe I should apologize. I don't want her to hate me. I don't want anyone to hate me.

Teacher handed out the test, I was looking at the questions but I couldn't focus. I need to relax. I took a few deep breaths and started answering the questions. They were all simple, after all. When I finished I looked around, then at Midnights. I can't leave her like that. The teacher was focused on her work so I nudged Midnights shoulder.

She looked at me with her typical "I don't care" look. I smiled gently and passed her my test so she could write down the answers. My heart was beating like crazy. Those few minutes seemed to drag on forever.

"Done" Midnights whispered and winked. Just a moment later the bell rang, bringing me back to reality. I give my test to the teacher and leave the class.

"Nine" I heard a familiar voice and my heart starts beating even faster. "Thank you" Midnights said with a smile on her face as she came closer to me.

"No problem" I said and smiled back. Midnights laughed.

"Calm down, your heart is beating so fast" Midnights said looking into my eyes. Damn I've never seen that color blue. She's so pretty. "See you at my party on Friday, bring your friends" she added and went her way leaving me literally hypnotized.
