Why would she ask me to go with her? Me, out of all People. I want to go to comfort her, but I need to get home. At the same time, I don't want her to feel like she has to go through this alone. I don't want her to feel like she has to go through anything alone. As I'm looking into those eyes of hers, I cave in and nod my head.
"Thank you."
She says.
She rushes over to her desk, grabs her bag, and I walk with her out of the classroom. She locks the classroom door, and we head to the parking lot.
As we approach her car, she hits the unlock button, and we get in. When we get in the car, she doesn't turn it on. She sits there with both of her hands on the wheel.
"Hey."
I say in almost a whisper. She looks over to me.
"It's going to be okay."
I tell her, and she gives me a small smile and starts the car. We pull out of the parking lot and onto the main road. Her eyes are on the road, but I can tell her mind is elsewhere—probably on her dad. I look over at her. Her eyes were pinned on the road. Her fingers gripped the steering wheel. The silence is killing me, although I don't know how to break it. I feel helpless.
We pull into a hospital parking garage as we get off the freeway. She hasn't said anything this whole time, worrying me. She turns off the car and gets out. I follow her movements. By the time I'm out of the vehicle and have shut the door, she's already halfway to the hospital. I run to catch up to her.
Once we enter the hospital, she goes to a desk, and I follow closely behind her.
"I'm here to see Thomas Walton."
The desk lady types something and then looks back up.
"Room 37."
Emily nods and speeds down the hall, making a sharp right turn and leaving me behind. Once I make the turn, I almost run into her. She's standing in front of a closed door.
Room 37
"Don't feel rushed. Go at your own pace."
I tell her, and she lets out a shaky breath. She walks closer to the door and opens it. I follow behind her.
An old white man with a mask on his face, eyes closed, and hooked up to many different devices looks pale and skinny. In the chair, there was a lady who looked a lot like Emily; that must be her mom. The lady rushed over to Emily and brought her in for a hug. Emily starts to cry as the lady rubs her back.
"It's okay."
The lady says and kisses her forehead. Emily pulled away and whipped her nose. The lady looked over at me. And I couldn't help but feel nervous. Why did she have to ask me to come with her? I have no right to be here.
"Who must you be?"
The lady asked as she moved to stand in front of me.
My eyes paced the room, looking at everything but the lady.
"I'm Andrès."
I say in a low tone.
I feel her staring at me. It's burning; I wish it would stop.
"Why are you here?"
She asked me rudely, making me look up at her, meeting her eyes.
"Emily asked me to be."
I said with no emotion.
"Is that right?"
The lady said, looking over at Emily. I did the same. Emily looks away and goes to sit down in a chair by her father.
