CHAPTER XIII. A New Threat

The overhead lights cast a dim, eerie blue tint, barely illuminating the shadowy figure that slithered silently above the armed guards. Elina Romanoff moved like a snake, her form slipping in and out of view as she navigated the narrow space above. The only thing that betrayed her presence was the glint of the katana she carried-sleek, deadly, and ready for action. But tonight, the blade would mostly remain clean; there would be no bloodshed, no lives taken. This mission was different, bound by the stringent protocols of SHIELD, a stark contrast to the ruthless world she once knew.

For Elina, this restraint was unfamiliar territory. In her previous life, the only rule was to complete the mission by any means necessary. Now, she had to adhere to protocols, follow orders, and abide by the oath she swore when she became a SHIELD agent. The transition was jarring, but it was a challenge she was determined to meet. The stakes were higher now, not just for her, but for those she had sworn to protect.

Her voice was barely a whisper as she spoke into her comms. "Adamík is beneath me. I have about ten seconds before he gets away."

Her partner, Xavier, responded with calm assurance. "I guess it's time."

Elina's muscles coiled as she prepared to drop. With one fluid motion, she slipped from her perch, landing gracefully in front of Martin Adamík, the man who had eluded justice for far too long. His crimes were abhorrent-trafficking young children across borders, selling them into a life of misery. This case was personal for Elina, stirring something deep within her that she hadn't felt in years. When the opportunity arose, she had been the first to volunteer. Xavier, as always, had followed her lead without question. That was their unspoken agreement-Elina led, and Xavier supported. It was a dynamic that suited her perfectly; control was something she had learned to value above all else.

"Hello, Martin," she greeted him, her voice icy with the weight of justice.

Adamík's eyes widened in terror as he recognized the danger he was in. Panic set in, and without a word, he turned and bolted. The guards, however, good their ground, blocking Elina's path with grim determination.

"We've got a runner," Elina reported, her tone tinged with the thrill of the chase.

Xavier's laughter echoed in her ear. "I've got him. You take care of the guards?"

"Of course," Elina replied, a slight smirk curling her lips.

"Shouldn't have even asked," Xavier quipped.
