"Mom! Can you tell me a story?"
"Sure, what story would you like?"
"I want the one about the guy who catches dreams!"
The mother nods, face illuminated by the light of the bedside lamp.
"Poe is what we call a Dreamcatcher..."
The child sits in bed, eagerly listening to his favorite story.
" Although his face and body is that of a human, don't let that fool you. Dreamcatchers are horrifying beings. Every night, they go out to hunt for the dreams of the people, whether it be nightmares or anything else. When they find a good dream, one with enough power, one with enough soul, they grab it with their clawed hands, and when they do, they don't let go. They put it into a big bag they all carry, and bring it back to the workshop. They then refine the dream, they remove the core substance of a dream, the soul of it. Every dream, good or bad, holds a piece of the bearer's soul. The dreamcatchers collect the souls, and feed them to the devil. All for one purpose, to one day, escape. You see, dreamcatchers were once human, just like you and I, but for different reasons, they made a deal with the devil. To have a better life, to cure a disease, to bring back a loved one, the devil grants all of these, but it comes with a price, their soul. The devil traps their souls into the dreams of people around the world. The dreamcatchers, they work for the devil, in hopes of one day, finding the dream their soul is in, and clearing their debt, freeing them from the devil they work for. Oftentimes, they work for centuries upon centuries, finding the dream holding their soul."
The mom took a deep breath. Clasping the hands of the child, she continued.
"Dreamcatcher, I've met one of them before. A truly terrifying experience. It was late at night, around midnight I would say. I was awake then, unable to sleep. I heard sounds outside my window, footsteps. But that's impossible, I thought, my room was on the third floor! But dreamcatchers don't need things like ladders and stairs to reach your window, they simply hang there, suspended in the air. That was what I saw that day. A person, I think, dressed in all black, had a long coat billowing out behind it. It wore a large hat, the wide rim completely shadowing over it's face. In its hands, was a big bag, it was lumpy and seemed to be filled with jars and jars of something. With a swift and practiced motion, it's hand reached through my window, passing through the glass as if it was air. It's hands loosely grasped at the air, before pausing. I could see the long, sharp claws on it's hands clearly, the sight terrifying for a young child like I was back then. I cowered in fear, unable to move. I saw its hands reach out again and pause yet again. It let out an animalistic growl, then a screech as it suddenly disappeared. The next morning, I checked my room, combing through it but I found nothing except a black nail. It was big, bigger than the average human, I still keep it to this day."
With that, the mother pulled out a necklace from around her neck, holding it by the chain to show the young boy, but he was already fast asleep, dreaming of dreamcatchers and the devil. The mother sighed and rubbed her thumb over the smooth surface of the black nail, it glowed a bright green with the touch and swirls of red, blue and yellow appeared just underneath the surface. The mother put back the necklace, tucking it into her shirt, ensuring that no one was able to see it.

The next day, the boy woke up. His mind still on dreamcatchers and the like.

"Mom! I'll head to school now!" The boy shouted as he put on his shoes and dashed out of the apartment.

As he walked and admired the scenery, he was still thinking about dreamcatchers. What would they look like in real life? Would he one day be able to meet one? He hoped he did, despite the terrifying tales surrounding these mysterious creatures, he couldn't help but feel attracted to them.
Little did he know, he was about to meet one that very night.

Timeskip

As the boy sleepily crawled to bed after brushing his teeth, he momentarily thought about meeting a dreamcatcher that night before falling asleep.

A few hours later...12 a.m.

"Thud!!!"

The boy was jolted up from his sleep by a sound coming from outside his bedroom window.

He sat in bed, terrified and nervously staring at the window, hoping that it was rain or a tree branch.

It wasn't.

As he stared, he saw a clawed hand, exactly like the one his mother described to him, reach through his closed window. The hand slowly extended towards him, it opened and closed, as if grabbing something. The boy took in a deep breath. He heard a strange sound and the hand quickly withdrew.

"Dammit, what do I do again?"

A low, deep voice sounded out. Hearing this, the boy couldn't help but shake in fear and happiness. He finally found a dreamcatcher! He slowly slid out of his bed, the dreamcatcher seemed friendly enough, and tiptoed towards the window. With a sudden burst of wind, he swiftly opened the window.

"AHH!!!"
