As I stepped into the ancient mansion, a chill ran down my spine. The air inside was thick with the scent of decay and rot. Aston and Valois led me deeper into the mansion, their eyes gleaming with an otherworldly light.
We walked through cobweb-covered hallways, our footsteps echoing off the walls. I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched, that unseen eyes were lurking in the shadows. Every step creaked beneath my feet, making me feel like an intruder.
Finally, we arrived at a grand ballroom, the ceiling lost in darkness. The room was filled with rows of dusty, ornate mirrors, each one reflecting a different version of ourselves. I saw myself as a human, as a vampire, and as something in between.
Aston smiled, his fangs bared. "This is where we will uncover the secrets of our past," he whispered.
Valois nodded, his eyes gleaming with approval. "And where you will discover your true nature."
I hesitated, feeling a sense of trepidation. What secrets lay hidden in the shadows? And what would I uncover about myself?
As I gazed into the mirrors, I saw flashes of memories that weren't mine. A young girl, a century ago, dancing in this very ballroom. A boy, ten years ago, crying in the corner of this room. I saw pieces of lives that weren't my own.
"Who are these people?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Aston's smile grew wider. "They are us," he said. "Or at least they were."
Valois stepped closer, his eyes burning with intensity. "We are the sum of our past lives," he said. "And you, my dear, are a puzzle waiting to be solved."
