chapter one

'Cause the sun shines a little more brightly
When you take things a little more lightly
It's all gonna turn out nicely
With just a taste of your heart

The sound of Life Is Sweeter from Descendants: The Rise of Red fills my room, and I can't help but smile. It’s like the perfect theme song for my life—bright, fun, and just a little bit magical.

My eyes flutter open, and within seconds, I’m wide awake, grinning from ear to ear.

It's likely you'll fall into something spicy
Just mix it up, you'll keep finding
That life is sweeter when you are

My room is a pink paradise, filled with plush toys, glittering accessories, and fairy lights that make everything feel like a fairytale. I jump out of bed, my feet barely touching the floor as I skip to the bathroom.

Today is going to be amazing—I can just feel it.

As I freshen up, I hum along to the tune in my head, brushing my hair and thinking about all the wonderful things that could happen today. I glance at myself in the mirror and smile.

Yep, today’s going to be my day!

Once I’m all ready, I dash out of my room, heading straight for the stairs. But instead of walking down like a normal person, I slide down the banister, giggling as I land softly at the bottom.

My big sister, Kendra, catches me in the act and gives me that look.

“Kiara, how many times have I told you not to slide down the stairs? The twins might see you and try to copy!”

I just grin at her. “But it’s so much fun, Kendra! Don’t worry, I’ll make sure they don’t get any ideas.”

She shakes her head, but I see the smile she’s trying to hide as she walks away.

I bounce into the kitchen, practically bursting with energy.

“Good morning!” I shout, my voice filling the room with the happiest sound in the world.

Dad, already sitting at the head of the table with his newspaper, looks up and smiles at me. “Good morning, princess.”

My older brother, Kai, glances at me with a smirk. “Uh-oh, I smell trouble. What kind of mischief is the little princess planning today?”

Kendra is at the stove, serving up bowls of her delicious red sundubu-jjigae.

“Whatever it is, I hope it’s nothing too crazy. We don’t need another cafeteria flash mob,” she teases.

I just shrug and smile, leaning over to plant a quick kiss on Kai’s cheek. He makes a face, pretending to be grossed out, but I know he secretly loves it. Without saying a word, he pulls out some extra money and hands it to me.

“Don’t spend it all on glitter this time,” he jokes, giving me a wink.

Dad looks up from his newspaper with a smile. “Kiara, can you call the twins down? Breakfast is ready, and we don’t want them to be late.”

I nod and let out a sharp whistle. It only takes a few seconds before I hear the sound of tiny feet thundering down the hallway. Moments later, two curly-haired little boys, Kian and Kipton, come racing into the kitchen, their matching school uniforms slightly crooked.

“Good morning!” they shout in unison, their voices so cheerful it makes me laugh.

I can’t help but giggle as Kendra serves up more food. Kai helps the twins into their seats, and Dad goes back to his newspaper, a contented smile on his face.
