chapter six

The school parking lot buzzed with the usual morning chatter as Jay parked the car. It was almost routine for me to get a ride with Jay, and sometimes Jungwon, while Ni-ki, as usual, was adamant about catching a ride with Jake or Heeseung.

Meanwhile, Sunghoon would rather walk barefoot across hot coals than be alone with Ni-ki.

The tension between them was almost comical, and the whole situation often ended with Ni-ki sulking in the backseat of Heeseung's car, grumbling about his luck with ride-shares.

And often told us once he is old enough, he'll buy a big motorbike to scare Sunghoon with it one day.

As soon as I stepped out with Sunhee and Jungwon, a burst of energy caught my attention.

I looked up to see Kiara standing in the middle of the lot, her presence as vibrant as ever. Her friends Giselle and Ningning flanked her, holding a bright yellow banner that read, "Keep smiling, my Sunshine."

The banner fluttered gently in the breeze, adding to the cheerful atmosphere.

Karina was standing next to them, gleefully throwing yellow confetti into the air. The confetti rained down around Kiara, creating a sparkling halo that made her look even more radiant. Her smile was as wide as ever, and her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm.

It was like a scene straight out of a cheerful morning cartoon.

Kiara’s voice rang out clearly as she greeted me. “Good morning, Sunoo!”

Before I could even fully process the scene, Kiara was already in motion. She handed Sunhee a massive Minion lollipop, and Sunhee’s face lit up with pure joy.

She practically bounced next to me, clutching the lollipop like it was a precious treasure. Her eyes were brimming with tears of gratitude as she looked up at me, her voice catching as she choked out a heartfelt “Thank you” to Kiara.

The sight was so adorable that it was impossible not to smile.

Kiara didn’t stop there. She handed Jay and Jungwon their own lollipops, their smiles growing wider as they took them. Jay gave me a knowing look, his grin stretching from ear to ear, while Jungwon just shook his head, clearly amused.

And then, it was my turn. Kiara presented me with a colorful scrapbook. The cover was adorned with doodles and stickers, all in a cheerful, handmade style.

Before I could say a word, Kiara and her little entourage were already waving goodbye and walking away, their bright energy fading into the distance.

Jay and Jungwon wasted no time in teasing me about the whole spectacle.

As soon as Kiara and her friends had skipped away, Jay nudged me with a grin. “Seriously, Sunoo, you’d be such a sore loser if you didn’t give Kiara a chance.”

Jungwon nodded, adding with a smirk, “Yeah, there’s always going to be someone else who’d be more than happy to take her off your hands.”

I rolled my eyes, trying to hide my smile. “I know, I know. Kiara’s definitely not someone you can just ignore.”

Jay and Jungwon exchanged knowing looks, their grins widening. “Exactly,” Jay said. “So you better not let her slip away.”

As Jay and Jungwon handed Sunhee the lollipops, she grabbed them with a grin, treating them like prized possessions.

With a gleam in her eye, she raised them high, waving them around like she’d just won a major victory. Then, practically bouncing with excitement, she darted off toward her friends, who were hanging out by the school entrance.
