chapter seven

I woke up earlier than usual, excitement bubbling in my chest as I headed to the kitchen.

Today was special.

I had decided to make a delicious breakfast for my family, all in baked goods, because nothing made me happier than seeing them enjoy what I created.

I started with the chocolate cookies, the rich smell of cocoa filling the air as I prepared the dough. Next were the muffins, fluffy and golden, with just the right amount of blueberries to make Kendra smile.

Finally, the chocolate tarts for Kai—his absolute favorite—and gluten-free donuts for Dad.

As the oven worked its magic, I could hear the familiar patter of tiny feet. My little twin brothers, Kian and Klipton, were the first to arrive, their sleepy faces lighting up as they spotted the cookies on the counter.

They each latched onto one of my legs, hugging me tightly, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

"More chocolate cookies, Kiara!" Kian begged, his eyes wide with hope.

"Yeah, more cookies, please!" Klipton echoed, his grip on my leg tightening as if he’d never let go unless I agreed.

"Okay, okay!" I giggled, ruffling their messy hair. "But only if you promise to share with each other."

They both nodded eagerly, practically bouncing in place as I handed them more cookies. Just then, Kendra waltzed in, already dressed for school, and gave me a sweet but demanding look.

"Kiara, can I have another muffin, please? Just one more?" she asked, batting her eyelashes in that way she knew I couldn’t resist.

"Of course, Kendra," I said, passing her a warm muffin, which she accepted with a grin.

Kai entered the kitchen next, already texting away on his phone, likely to his girlfriend.

"Kiara, can I take some of these chocolate tarts with me? They’re perfect for…uh, sharing," he said, his voice a little sheepish.

I smirked, knowing exactly who those tarts were meant for.

"Sure thing, Kai. Just make sure she knows you’re the one who baked them," I teased, watching as his cheeks turned a faint pink.

Finally, Dad walked in, looking over the spread with a smile.

"These all look amazing, Kiara. You’re really spoiling us today," he said, reaching for the gluten-free donuts I’d made especially for him. "I’ll just take a couple of these."

As they all dug in, I couldn’t help but feel a warmth in my chest.

"Thanks, Kiara! You’ve really outdone yourself," they all said in various ways, and I laughed when Kai joked, "We should thank Sunoo for this! You’re so in love you could open a bakery in his name."

I blushed, playfully swatting his arm. "Maybe I will," I said, not entirely joking.

With breakfast done and my family happily stuffed, I grabbed my bag and made my way out the door.

On my way to pick up Ningning, I stopped by the convenience store to grab a mint chocolate bar for Sunoo. I knew it was his favorite. I also picked up two extra coffees for Jungwon and Jay and a little hot chocolate for Sunhee.

I couldn’t wait to see their reactions.

By the time I reached Ningning’s house, she was already outside, practically bouncing on the balls of her feet.

"You’re in such a good mood today, Kiara," she said as she got into the car, her face quickly becoming covered in crumbs as she devoured one of the leftover muffins. "What would you even do without Sunoo to look forward to?"
