⚊ chapter five
The weekend felt like a breath of fresh air after the whirlwind week that had just passed. Saying goodbye to Sunoo and Haewon outside his house felt like the final note in a beautiful melody.
I wasn’t entirely sure what I was closing the door on, but the tune felt complete, and that was enough for now.
As I watched Haewon turn and walk away toward her own house, a warm breeze of nostalgia brushed against my heart. It was strange how things had changed between us over the years.
Back in middle school, we were all so close—Sunoo, Haewon, and I. We were like a trio of inseparable characters from a storybook, our laughter and adventures filling the pages of our lives.
But high school had a way of scattering people, like autumn leaves in the wind.
I shook my head, trying to clear away the lingering wistfulness as I made my way back home. My steps led me directly to my older sister Kendra's room, drawn by the familiar sounds of our baby twin brothers causing their usual ruckus inside.
The chaos was like the lively background music of our home, and it never failed to make me smile. I was used to it by now, and so was Kendra.
When I opened the door, Kendra was lying on her bed, a gentle smile playing on her lips as she saw me.
The twins were rolling around on the floor, their giggles filling the room with the kind of joy that could light up even the dreariest of days.
“Hey, Kiara!” Kendra greeted me with a voice as warm as a summer morning. “Rough day?”
I shrugged and floated over to her, sitting down beside her with the grace of someone who had danced her way through life. “Not really, just a lot on my mind.”
Kendra raised an eyebrow, clearly sensing there was more to it. “Is this about Sunoo?”
I sighed, leaning back against the headboard, letting my thoughts drift like clouds in the sky. “Yeah... and Haewon too. Do you remember how close we all were in middle school? It feels like a lifetime ago.”
Kendra nodded thoughtfully, her gaze drifting upwards as if she could see those memories painted on the ceiling. “You three were inseparable. But then high school happened, and everyone went their separate ways.”
“Yeah,” I agreed, the memories fluttering around me like the pages of a well-loved book. “Sunoo found his group, Haewon focused on her studies and extracurriculars, and I... well, I guess I just became more of myself. Shamelessly bubbly and positive. I never thought much about popularity, but I guess people started to notice me because of it. And Sunoo... well, everyone saw his charm because of me. It was like I was shining a spotlight on how amazing he’s always been.”
Kendra smiled gently, her eyes twinkling with the wisdom only an older sister could have. “That’s what happens sometimes. People grow, change, find new interests. But it doesn’t mean the bond you had wasn’t real.”
I thought back to middle school, back to when Haewon first joined our school. The memory was vivid, like a scene from a movie replaying in my mind.
It was the beginning of the school year, and the classroom buzzed with excitement. New faces mingled with the old, everyone eager to see who their new classmates would be.
I was at my usual spot by the window, chatting animatedly with Sunoo about the latest drama unfolding in our favorite show, when I noticed her—a shy, quiet girl standing awkwardly at the back of the room.
Her uniform was crisp, and her hair was neatly tied back, but the nervous way she held onto her bag told me she was new.
Without a second thought, I bounced out of my seat and made my way over to her.
